So if this deal is padded significantly with contra .
will Pr be talking it down due to the contra component as he has repeatedly done with the NRL deal .
all we heard for last 12+ months is contra contra contra.
id bet he won’t be too negative about afl contra.
yes absolutely, cash is king. Contra is useless padding made to make a deal look better than it actually is.

nrl contra is around $30-35mill out of the $402mill deal this time would be my guess.

afls last deal was $16mill contra out of $416mill. Let’s see how big of a slice it is this time. I’ll make my judgements on cash amounts.

There was a team in Perth, then Super League came along, and from 1995-2012, the game lost it’s independence.

In the last decade, the NRL has been playing catch up football. And when you play catch up football, inevitably you make mistakes.

IMO, the game should look after it’s own backyard, rather than go crazy with what another mob is up to.

If in the next 5 years or so it can expand NRLW, bring back Perth as the 18th, increase tv rights deal from one to the next, install transfer windows, improve grassroots, sort out the Canberra stadium issue, solve the Sydney suburban ground conundrum, be a step ahead with concussion and save money to buy an asset, then the game would be in great shape as it heads towards the 2030’s.

You’re right. The SL and it’s aftermath put us back a couple of decades. I would add though their management in that same time frame has very good

I think you have pinpointed a few issues. Stadiums are a big one. I would add even your stadium at the Gong as another and that would help the Dragons a bit.

Perth should be the next side and then hopefully we really go hard at NZ and the Pacific and look at international football because that is our advantage against fumbleball and get to 20 sides. Also getting assets (a stadium and some others)

Probably. But equally if it is $100m difference in cash p.a. we should feel sold out. We'll wait for the results to be announced, but that sort of gap is something (excuse the alarmist in me) we can't come back from.

Not really ,
if both deals are at about 8% of their deals as contra & when both have the same number of games per week then we will have a fairer comparison

The NRL will look at this aflol deal closely & be looking to be paid a similar amount by broadcasters when we add team 18 ( could be in the life of this next deal of ours 23-27)
& I don;t think excuses of the past will be accepted next time around.

Not that it can be used as an excuse for our smaller deal , but the aflol needs a lot more money then the NRL to function , larger grants to its clubs because they have more players then an NRL club & a lot more of them are struggling financially with at least 2 simply money vaccume cleaners with nothing likley to change anytime soon. Plus their new 18 team womens comp is going to cost a bomb as well for little return.

lots of dynamics at play here

Just today alone the story posted here said $550m a year, Code app listed ch9 with $500m. That there is a big difference in reporting in the same day

We have seen what Thursday night does to crowds, They have Pay TV and FTA Sat night game. That changes like I said the details are needed to fully judge
Yeh if foxtel are success
Different set ups though

Panthers have $143m in Assets, Yet are in 2 different entities

Souths have Rich owners so lets not pretend NRL clubs are broke
Indeed rugby league clubs own close to a billion in assets

easts own close to a whole block in Bondi junction which they will redevelop one day into a billion dollar asset .

I saw the broncos have like 15 million in cash

indeed whilst afl adds zombie clubs which are bleeding tens of millions a year the nrl just added a club with one hundred million in assets

afl finances are stuffed. Even with a large tv deal they are still in bad shape financially

I love your positivity but let’s not delude ourselves. Most of their clubs, sans a couple, are very well off. Their big clubs like Collingwood and West Coast, for example, dwarf ours

We also have (or at least had until recently) some clubs who were in pretty bad shape financially (Cronulla, Gold Coast, Newcastle and even Manly pre takeover)

Let’s not kid ourselves: $100 million difference is very significant and V’Landys and the ARLC should be absolutely grilled if this eventuates.

We are supposedly beating them in ratings per game and increasing per year whilst theirs is going down yet they would have managed to secure a fairly significant increase whilst we secured a very minimal one. Now they would have obviously done a brilliant job (we need to get some of their management really) but we have done a pretty poor one in comparison.

The biggest ever gap was $83mill and that was when the game was owned by news ltd. if this is bigger the arlc have some very serious questions to answer.

The gap in 23&24 is already going to be massive at $70mill each year, if it goes higher in 2025 it will be a cock up on a monumental level by vlandys. First time nrl has negotiated a deal without using a specialist consultancy firm to lead the negotiations. Looks telling.

I don`t think we can underestimate the advantage we have with Touch and Tag Rugby League as well. There`s over 700 000 people playing those variations of our sport Australia wide without really trying.
I`d like to see a big push on Touch and League-Tag World Cup`s combined with more Oz and international formats all specifically tied to either NRL clubs or unequivocally Rugby League itself.
It`s a no-brainer way to introduce and engage people with our sport.

Exactly, something that I had thought of as well.
Another issue and although minor is the number of players needed to field a team, probably at least 20 players per team. Given declining participation in sport it is only going to get more and more difficult for fumbleball clubs at grass-roots levels to field teams. This could be a real and on-going problem in regional areas that often make up the lifeblood of a lot of sporting codes.

Football clubs at times have struggled, All have assets galore if they need to sell. As Penrith did 10 years ago

I hate AFL as the next person but the ratings aren't like for like, Take the Sat night games different ones on Ch7 depending on the state you live in. Means those 2 games are meshed into one

To be fair those clubs didn’t not that long ago. Newcastle and GC were on death’s door until they were bought by other parties. Cronulla were struggling before their recent developments.

GC are a basket case and should never of been let in
Knights are an example of the perils of Private ownership, much better following the Leagues Club backing model

In hindsight they probably should have just picked another Brisbane side. In any case, so long as they get success they will be fine. Massive growth area too.

Aren’t a lot of clubs owned by private owners and not leagues clubs? Just off the top of my head I know of GC, Dragons, Broncos, Storm, Manly, Souths and Roosters. Most other sports also use private ownership as you need massive investment nowadays. So, I don’t necessarily think it is the model that is the problem (if a League Club starts faltering the same thing happens) it is the process of electing the ownership.

Also I would say that the Knights did not have an alternative at that stage - maybe a different private owner of course but they needed outside investment. Before Wests Newcastle took them over, they’d always been poor - it is probably the fault of the NSWRL at the time for letting them in at the time without proper financial planning.

Nah they don’t

bigger crowds and membership

in terms of assets it’s not even close

and I’m not even counting all the billionaires involved owing rugby league clubs

check out how much assets your clubs owns (not including its four ? Leagues clubs )

wait till vlandys adds nz two league will get close to that in cash

Gold Coast needed to be an existing club promoted into the NRL

Dragons have a couple of Leagues clubs. 50/50 share with Bruce Gorton

Manly have Leagues clubs
Roosters have several other assets too
Newcastle are the perils of a Regional team in a National comp.

The only issue I have is what if the said owner gets bored with the club and wants out?
