2023-2028 next tv deal discussion

They could try for a second Brisbane team with this sort of coin but financially it would still be a disaster. Up until they started winning a season or so ago the Lions had been a financial black hole for over a decade in Brisbane and are only still around from constant propping up to the tune of millions of dollars every year from AFL coffers.

Even when winning their ratings are abysmal in Queensland. Here's hoping the Dolphins removing potential sponsors from the market make any new team in Brisbane just that much harder for the AFL tossers and when the Lions stop winning again makes the AFL have to divert some of these new found riches to again propping up the Lions as well as the Suns and GWS.
The one good thing V'landys did was introduce the Dolphins. Other than that he's been a self-serving charlatan who says what people want to hear so they turn a blind eye when he doesn't deliver. He sucks up to Ch9 and Foxtel so they don't force him out like they did with Greenberg, Smith and Grant. Vlandys only cares about keeping his job.

He doesn’t have to suck up too much if he is giving them inside deals

Don’t worry we’ll bring back the Bears and play a few games at NSO instead. That will bring the corporate money.
The media didn't even take Perth seriously until V'landys mentioned dropping a dead Sydney team there. We've had three strong bids from Perth over the last decade by Peter Cummins, Tony Sage and another bloke. Our media and the ARLC don't want the game to grow.

Yeah News Ltd want him.

Mate the difference is $200m and even if you take out all the buttressing it is still plenty north of $100 million.

Instead of going but but answer me this question: do you think that fumbleball is worth $100m-$200m more than League? If not, then it isn’t a good deal.

I will break it down as simple as I can. AFL count Telstra so I will add the $40m they pay NRL to the deal

NRL

2023 - $449m
2024 - $449m
2025 - $449m
2026 - $449m
2027 - $449m
2028 - ???
2029 - ???
2030 - ???
2031 - ???

AFL
2023 - $473m
2024 - $473m
2025 - $550m
2026 - $550m
2027 - $550m
2028 - $550m
2029 - $550m
2030 - $550m
2031 - $550m

NRL and AFL currently are pretty much neck and neck allowing for the extra game.

These deals get started about 2 years out so in year 1 of the new AFL deal

Dolphins would of been in the comp a few years then, Ready to plan for the 9th game. That will add value.

The NRLW should of found its spot in the calendar, with 17 teams also. Adding value

So no reason why on the last 4 years of the AFL deal NRL can't be back to neck and neck. So it is a timing thing overlap more than a terrible deal for NRL

I agree. After the war was when we should have said ok these Sydney clubs can relocate here, here, here and here. You could have moved 3-4 and merged a couple more that made sense (St George - Illawarra for instance). We could have had Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne etc.

There would have been the initial crying but people would have eventually moved with the times.

Anyway we are stuck now and this is the type of thinking that comes from it.

I see so you add Telstra - who dont have any rights at all - to the NRL deal, but you havent added them to the AFL deal where they actually have rights.

Ill play. Telstra have just renewed for 90m until 2027 for NRL/NRLW naming rights - thats 18m a year, and about what the AFL gets now for Toyota until 2023. (The AFL has another naming rights partnership with NAB for AFLW)

So I can add the money Toyota pay for naming rights to the AFL deal now can I? Thats another 18m a year until the end of 2023. I mean since we're all focussed on equality and all

Media rights - both organisations have unspecifed contra.

NRL
2023 "over 400m" +18m Telstra
2024 "over 400m" + 18m Telstra
2025 "over 400m" + 18m Telstra
2026 "over 400m" + 18m Telstra
2027 "over 400m" + 18m Telstra

AFL
2023 473m + 18m Toyota +2-3m NAB
2024 473m
2025 643m
2026 643m
2027 643m

Are you seriously suggesting that $100m is a small amount?

Also, are you really suggesting that we are going to get $100m more in our next deal for a extra game when we got how much more an extra side? If we had their management and a national game then perhaps that might be a chance, but we don’t have a national game and we definitely don’t have their leadership

Telstra was lumped in the rights from 2017-2022. $200m for that period.

Telstra has just re-signed, Why would they of resigned for less?

So for 3 x years they get 100m more? Then another deal by the NRL will be in process.
Still that 100m over 3 years isnt great considering the NRL plays more games throughout the season than the AFL, including S.O.O.

How much would a 9th game bring? $20m?

What about a full women's comp? $50m?

9 games a week compared to 8. 5 capital cities to 3
