So what? Few countries anywhere in the world have restrictions that certain events must be broadcast on only certain channels.

Know why the EPL gets so much money for its TV rights? Its because Sky paid an absolute motza to get them when pay tv first came about in the UK. Its why they get billions of dollars. In the US the FTA channels bid for the NFL and NBA (for example) because they know the cable channels will, and it rates. They make a ton of money, as does those sports. That is how those sports maximise their revenue, no restrictions.

Fact is anti-siphoning has propped up the FTA Channels in Australia, who do sweet bugger all. They do sports coverage at the lowest cost they can get away with as they know they only have 2 competitors bidding against them. Also if anti-siphoning legislation hadn't come in, OptusVision or even Galaxy may have become the dominant pay TV provider before Foxtel even got off the ground. If nothing else, it may have resulted in a bigger mass of subscribers, which in turn would have lowered the subscription charge.

Our FTA industry is a bunch of freeloaders, like many big business in Australia.

It goes hand in hand with the Australian content quota though not to mention the sport doesn't follow A League, Rugby and ODI cricket and lose relevance and income as a result

It is not going to happen anyway as anti siphoning laws wouldn’t allow a GF or SOO to not be shown on FTA
That is not how it works. The anti siphoning law only states that FTA gets first dibs on bidding for an event over pay. If FTA pass it up then pay can try to obtain the rights. FTA can also "share" the rights with a pay partner if so desired. It's how ODI cricket played in Australia ended up on Foxtel. Seven bought the rights but on-sold to Foxtel.

Fair enough but how likely is that though? Also, do you really think that the government would allow that after all the fuss they made about the fumbleball rights - not the regular season of course but event games like the grand final or SOO?

I think you misread. Telstra and other companies at least pay for privileges with fumbleball. Old V’Landys likes to roll over for them and get nothing in return.
Nah I got it

I meant Telstra aren’t paying a billion to the afl for marvel

it’s total bs

Indeed. I haven’t read a report yet of Telstra paying them a billion dollars.

They are obviously paying them more than us. Although if you don’t put things out to tender like V’Landys these things happen

They are getting 500 million from seven and fox

that’s the figure to beat which I think we can with an 18 team

then you can just say what a great leader vlandys is lol

I would hope we actually get something like 550 million of stan are a genuine bidder against foxtel

Where are you getting the $500 million figure from?

We are also getting $370m in cash. That’s a fair way back

Does he just pluck figures out of the air? So far media reported figures are seven and fox paying afl $550mill cash a year and a afl confirmed total cash deal of “over” $4bill. (More than $571mill cash a year). Leaving around $72mill a year total in contra and other things. Just saying something doesnt make it true lol.

meanwhile we will currently get In The region of $340mill cash plus from fox and nine until 2027. But yeh the ninth game alone is going to close a $210mill cash difference in Australian deals lol.

It could get up to say $500 million if it was actually put out to tender. But we know that is not going to happen.

Doesn’t look like it. Reading between the lines of Vlandys bizarre statements I fully expect a fox extension until 2031 with maybe $40-50mill a year extra thrown in to existing deal. Will only put us around $130mill a year behind afl lol.

Of course. My statements are based on what we should get (you know if we were run by somebody who had half a brain or isn’t some lackey of News Limited.

Nevertheless, we should be 10% less than fumbleball (max) based on all the data. Probably even if we had a national competition.

The last deal we’d manage to close the overall gap to around 7.5%. In 2025 the cash gap will be around 33%! the biggest it’s ever been by far

News ltd posted that figure in an article before the afl told them to pull it

it was 3.5 billion over 7 years for fox and seven (no Telstra l)

that’s pretty much what I expected which is actually quite good for them given their last deal was around 400 million excluding Telstra

with an 18th team you would think getting 500 million would be fairly easy

we should be aiming for 550 million pa and this is why they should look at Monday night football on top of nz2 to really get the bidding going

Exactly it allows FTA to have the option to get it
