Yep you keep justifying poor financial management

well you do keep not knowing what you are talking about so here we are. and talk about blind faith in leaders. Your one of the worst on here for that.

lol poor financial management. The loan is being serviced appropiately, the level of debt is the lowest its has been in 5 years, revenue will return to almost normal if not record levels this year. Increased broadcasting revenue next year, and then a massive bump in 2025.

I dont think anyone is losing any sleep over Gils management of the league. Except Vlandys who talks about the AFL at every opportunity.

A few years ago, Rupert did say, " we've always preferred Aussie Rules". And the News Ltd CEO backed him up. My theory is, once the AFL has enough subscriptions in NSW and Qld, then Fox would ditch the NRL. IMO, that's where Fox is working towards.

For many years, Fox wanted every sport. But rights deals are becoming expensive. In recent times, Fox have let go of Super Rugby, EPL and the A League.

Currently, Fox to their chagrin, still needs the NRL for it's subscriptions in NSW and Qld. Also those same subscriptions could be partly funding the AFL deal.

The NRL needs to be fully aware or assume of Fox's long term intentions, otherwise the competition may become second rate.

They let go of Super Rugby because it just didn't rate, nor did the A-League and with the A-League they complained about the production costs.

As to the EPL, Fox didn't "let it go". Their offer was blown out of the water by Optus who offered a lot more than Fox did.

As to AFL subscriptions outstripping NRL in Qld and NSW, I very much doubt it will happen despite how much publicity they give it. If Fox ditched the NRL, then I like many would ditch my Foxtel subscription post haste. Fox, and news Ltd carry on like they do because of successive NRL administrations letting them get away with stuff that the AFL comparatively would not.

I doubt anyone thinks that, at least in the short to medium term. Question is can fox afford to increase their $240mill for nrl in 2028?

paying an estimated $390mill for afl can’t leave much fat on the bone to up nrls payment unless there is a massive hike in subscribers or fees.

A-League stopped rating when they lost the EPL rights. It was a good lead in to the EPL coverage but people aren't interested in it as a product in its own right. Fox will want to keep both the NRL and AFL as it gives them reach in all parts of the country. If they don't have the NRL they don't have subscribers in NSW and Qld from March to September, simple as that.

Im sure you also noticed the subsequent drop in revenue and the lack of complaints from AFL clubs and players about funding cuts, and the subsequent increase last year, and the further increase this year.

Debt is not a bad thing. If you can service it and discharge it in an apropriate time. Especially if it nets you a billion dollar asset in the process, The AFL is very clearly servicing it.

Piss poor management is not having any physical assets and then buying a bar in queensland and acting like youve saved the world. I mean even Vlandys said the NRL couldnt get a loan.

If Fox want the NRL, they will find a way to pay more, such as an increase in Kayo fees, otherwise you can say goodbye to subscribers in NSW and Qld.

I always love hearing from an afl perspective

it’s funny seeing how a minority of australia thinks

taking on debts is good, making profits is bad

for those of us outside the afl bubble we don’t have this blinkered view lol

No, it is just called a nuanced view.

Debt is, not in of itself and depending on what the debt is for, a bad thing. It is like most things in life, it is entirely dependent on the circumstances.

For example, how do you think any investment is made in this world (well at least most): it is serviced by debt. Most of us buy a house or start a business or make any sort of investment through debt. It is only a bad thing when you don’t have the equity/assets to pay the debt or it is used for things that doesn’t grow your business or provide financial security.

Profit is generally good and is much better then making a loss but again how are you using that profit and how was the profit obtained.

Lmao spending money you don’t have isn’t an investment

especially when that money goes to paying millions of dollars to executives and gws

at one stage Gillion was on around 2 million plus pa that’s just wasted money for someone who basically didn’t do much

I’m presuming from that statement and the manner in which you’ve proffered it that you have never bought a house, bought a car and don’t have any assets at all?

I know that you are steadfastly defending your man (and he has done well here) but don’t try and play dumb or be obtuse about economics.

What you said (albeit noted in such a tone to make It look like it is unusual and a reprehensible thing) is essentially the definition of debt and pretty much practiced by everybody and every business around the world (including fumbleball obviously) - borrowing against existing assets to pay for things that you don’t have the existing capital for. Or as you like to put it, spending money or capital that you don’t have. Fumbleball could do it because they could. We couldn’t and if we had the choice, we would have.

Anyway, without debt the world would collapse in a heap - seriously where do you think the jobs and massive economic growth of the past 30-40 years has largely come from - easy access to debt financing at low interest- although I will say that right now we are going through a readjustment.

Back to the ARLC, they have done extremely well on the revenue/profit side although Greenberg did similarly well (at a time) and it didn’t make much of a difference when COVID hit. Therefore as V’Landys said the game needs to build a much bigger asset portfolio. Let’s hope he does that, so next time the proverbial hits the fan, we don’t have to reach for the scalpel.

That extra million or so salary for 100 millions of extra TV money.

Sounds like a good deal to me
Abdo under $1mill wage delivers $402mill deal $12mill naming rights
gill $2mill wage delivers $643mill deal $21mill naming rights

hmmm whose worth their salary more? Tough one!

(yes I’m being a bit unkind to Abdo as we know he doesn’t actually get to make any decisions or do much)

the real waste of money are the ARL commissioners who are drawing $100k each and let this disaster of a tv deal happen!

That is now the big problem for them IF NRL go to open market and IF someone else what’s it. It’s hard to se how fox can survive paying out $390mill for afl and say $350mill for Nrl. By the time 2028 onwards comes around the migration to kayo will be even greater. They’d need 2.5 million subscribers just to break even at current subscription price.

Christ thats an ignorant statement. meanwhile in reality....

Never bought a house or new car? Hell you can borrow money to buy shares.
As long as you can service your loans and your asset doesnt depreciate rapidly, its perfectly fine.

especially when that money goes to paying millions of dollars to executives and gws

Or possibly stadium maintrenance since they borrowed an extra 18m, and the stadium lost 13m the same year.

and clubs and development and facitilities funding and all the other things the AFL actually spends money on.

at one stage Gillion was on around 2 million plus pa that’s just wasted money for someone who basically didn’t do much

And reportedly offered the same in 2012 by the ARLC, and reportedly headhunted by Liverpool FC. Its called demand.

Not to mention he's delivered on all of his KPIs for the league.
