The proposed pre season cup is an interesting development , clubs will play trials anyway & the ones televised this year rated extremely well ..

To put a title on the line will add something & a lot of NRL fans will re activate their subscriptions to foxtel services early but.... I propose the NRL put the preseason out to tender & have anyone able to purchase it ,Give those slime bags at foxtel a little taste of what will be instore for them in a few years. Prospective bidders could put it completely behind a pay wall to entice the maximum amount of subscribers

let them all make their case ...

500K plus subscribers at $30 for the month long tournament , I'd sign up to watch the Raiders for sure
Yea it mighten bring too much extra in $$ , but it would be a clear shot across the bow of foxtel to clearly tell them the days of being guaranteed NRL content are well & truly over

There is no way to fit a month of fixtures in the off season.

Surely there is a non-compete clause in the TV deals that prevents the NRL from selling any extra content during there contract years.

I can't see the pre- season being a thing.

For mine, a Nines weekend is the way to go

There isn’t a non compete clause

and they are playing trials as is and getting nothing for it

the code you always say is run so well has a pre season nab cup so why shouldn’t we ?

and their season is now as long as ours with their extra magic weekend

if there was a non compete clause they wouldn’t be able to sell a nines either

pre season comp should be taken to country towns and regional areas over Australia and nz and maybe even png

Theres plenty of time ,
first weekend in Feb til last weekend in Feb ..
& maybe there is a clause but I'd hope it would be in the form of last refusal forcing foxtel to pay what the NRL wants , not what foxtel want..

9's are lame , just a glorified jersey flegg weekend that would be , at least in a proper tournament coaches will play their stars to get combos & fitness up aka the same as trials.

No the AFL doesn't have a pre season cup, and hasn't for a decade.

The season is to long as it is, clubs and players won't be playing an extra month of footy.

See above.

It's not going to happen. Most teams only run out there 17 for one of the two trials.

I'd be very very surprised if they haven't locked down first rights on any new content during the life of the contract. including the ninth game.
Why in some ways we are better waiting to go to open tender on the whole lot in 2026 for 2028 fresh start. with 18 clubs, 18 NRLW clubs, 2 magic weekends, 3 origins, proper well thought out 5 year Int calendar inc world nines and a pre season including a cup, first nations all stars WCC and NRL nines.
You could split that lot into three providers even to maximise revenue:
Pre season, Origin and Int's Ch10
NRL and NRLW Ch9 4-5 games a week
Streaming all games

or similar. At the very least it needs to go to open market and proper tender process undertaken. None of this contract extension BS that we can all see coming.

Pre season you could have
1st weekend in Feb NRL Nines (nice earner for NRL) (inc NRLW Fri-Sun event)
2nd weekend in Feb pre season cup 3 weekends of games
2nd weekend March All stars and WCC (held in Oz every year)
Shorter 22 round regular season KO mid March (10 home, 10 away 2 MW's)

effectively gives you a 6 week pre season of content to sell to TV

they still play a load of pre season games

and it’s up to the rlpa to agree or not

as usual since It means they get more money they will agree

they already play trials anyway why not make money of it

I think it’s a brilliant idea tbh

The only issue is, It is a huge start up cost for only a month of footy. So I doubt anyone other then possibly Stan bids, Yet everyone hates ch9 though

The issue is with the 5 weeks of international footy, Then to give the RLPA the time off they require

So now Vlandys has a rocket up his arse about the failed tv deal it would seem he is busy scrambling for new content ideas to bring in some more $'s in this tv deal period. So far we have on the table as possibles:

. addition of 18th club and ninth time slot before 2028
. pre season cup
. end of season tests
. expansion of NRLW to 17/18 clubs during before 2028

anything else I've missed?

realistically only the 18th club adds any real value as far as I can see.
His mindset is similar to Arthurson and Quayle, although he is better than them and the best leader we've ever had. Says a lot about the other turkeys who've run our game. He's made some big blunders that have set our game back by 10 to 15 years.

V'landys will become the most productive leader the game has had if he brings in a Perth-based team that's owned by Western Australians. It cannot be an NSWRL team that plays some games in Perth. If he and the NRLWA sell the West Coast Pirates to a Perth consortium to be the 18th team then he will have done more for the game than all previous leaders from the last 40 years.

I think he needs to crack down hard on braindead thugs like JWH and NAS. Those two troglodytes are always belting people around the head without sufficient consequence. If the NRL keeps on giving these pricks a slap on the wrist for their cheap shots and they go on to reoffend within 3 or 4 weeks then look out if the second offence causes serious injury, as the aggrieved party will be able to argue it wouldn't have happened if the thugs had have been suspended. Lawyers will be lining up to take the ARLC to court.

If we were to have a pre-season then we would need to reduce the premiership to 18 rounds. The RLPA will not accept more demands on the players.

That would only devalue our TV rights, so I can't see it being a thing.

Even if the NRL were to bring this into place, clubs are going to field substandard teams at best for most of the tournament, so it will quickly become devalued.

Pre-season comps are going the way of the dinosaur in most if not all sports.

How do you know there isn't a non compete clause?

So Fox and Nine who have a team of lawyers advising them on broadcast contracts did not include a clause saying that if the NRL creates a new product or competition, they don't have rigjt of first refusal for broadcasting that new product?
Well if that’s what you want to believe sure you go right ahead

but if it doesn’t compete with existing time slots then no it wouldn’t make sense for them to have that

the arlc got rid of first and last refusal rights ages ago

and you were talking about a non compete clause now your saying first right of refusal

make your mind up lmao
