I wonder if the discounted rate for 2020-22 means the NRL have taken back scheduling control and hopefully no Thursday games and KO at advertised times

you would hope there is more to be won than that given it’s rumoured we could be giving up $60million plus that we dont have to.

Sounds like it's all over the place.

The Herald reported on Wednesday that Nine Entertainment Co, the publisher of this masthead, was close to finalising a revised three-year deal with the NRL which would make up a portion of a $1.9 billion broadcast deal.

However the figures outlined in the Herald, which said Nine would receive a discount of about $50-$70 million over the next three seasons, has left Foxtel disappointed and now seeking a better deal.

A source with knowledge of the negotiations says Foxtel are now further away from a deal than when it was two days ago, returning to the negotiation table to pressure the NRL into a better arrangement.

Foxtel's delay is likely to push the release of this season's draw back to next week, as both broadcast partners finalise their selections of games they want included in the schedule
Nine’s revised deal could represent a saving of up to 20 per cent on what it was originally due to pay in the final three years of the deal. Based on that discount, Nine will pay about $85-$90m in 2020, a discount of up to $30m. It will pay in the vicinity of $90-$100m in the final two years.

Foxtel, which was originally meant to pay $190m in 2020, is now angling for a similar percentage saving over the remaining three years of the existing deal before it agrees on an extension from 2023 to 2027 worth around $200m a year.

More from Webster

Will the other commissioners be so meek when V'landys completes the delicately poised broadcast negotiations with Nine Entertainment Co and Foxtel later this week?

News Corp, which owns Foxtel, reported on Sunday that a deal with both broadcasters was almost done. Better still, it would be extended until the end of 2027 — five years beyond the end of the
The Herald, which is owned by Nine, reported on Wednesday that Nine wasn’t prepared to make the enormous leap of faith all the way until 2027 - just until the end of 2022 but for less money.

The funny thing about the heady world of sports broadcast rights negotiations is how all parties pretend publicly they don’t need each other when they all actually need each other one way or another.

But nobody needs it more than Fox, which is hemorrhaging subscribers with no sport being played. A seven-year deal the NRL assures its future, although a deal for that long has been met with scepticism from many across the NRL, especially the clubs.

While the last $1.8 billion deal struck with Nine and Foxtel was celebrated as an enormous windfall for the game, the devil was in the detail for those who had to make it work.

The 25 Thursday night matches per season might be a TV ratings winner, and the timeslot of 6pm on a Friday gives people something to watch at the pub immediately after work, but the clubs loathe them because those times undermine crowds and therefore membership.

When interim NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo held a phone hook-up with club bosses on Tuesday night, he could provide little detail on what looms as the most significant broadcast deal in rugby league history.

“Because he didn’t have any,” said one.

Minor details.

So it's all wind and bubbles FTM.
All the Herald journos taking a punt on the likely outcome.
The only thing that is certain ,there will be a drop in value, because all companies sport and others are bleeding badly ,advtg dollars will be down.Nine and certainly Foxtel need the nRL because the latter will be stuffed.
Waiting for an announcement is like drawing teeth, and we then may still not know the actuals.
Then again I'd rather be waiting for something that will happen, than being a RU supporter with a begging bowl pleading for a TV station to like him.

The only thing that's certain is Webster will continue to carry on like an utter prat whenever he isnt given answers to whatever he questions even if those questions are ones that couldnt/shouldnt be answered.

As if anyone from the NRL with any brains would divulge commercial in confidence information at exactly the time that could scuttle or prejudice negotiations.

We wont know the reality until around Feb 2022 when we get to see the NRL's financial report for yr21 and can see how much they actually got paid, and wherethey actually cut and what impact it had on non media revenue generation.

AFL back June 11 confirmed. Facing significant cross over issues with cricket now. Would be surprised if they don't get a bigger write down in tv rights than the NRL based on the decreasing availability of grounds, likely loss of brownlow presentation, unknown availability for GF and general shitting of the bed on Gills behalf.

If you can believe latest media reports it looks like the NRL and broadcasters have settled on a Tv deal.Bleeding Paywall from Telecrap prevents me from quoting all. Also mentioned on TV deal had been done.
Appears close to a $2bn deal ,which was predicted earlier.
Ch Nein contract remains til 2022 ,hip jolly pip.Only a couple more years of the nauseating commentators.
Foxtel at least til end 2026.
In effect money and time factors remain unchanged on earlier guesswork..

ARLC has agreed to deal, now it is left to Broadcasters board meetings to sion off on the deals.

Still pretty sketchy stuff. No idea on digital, and how much we dropped and whether WRL is included.
Have zero idea about contras ,anyway Ch 9 would have SFA idea on how to assist on contras re promotions ,as the past has clearly shown.

NRL broadcast deal rubber-stamped by ARLC; Fox Sports, Channel 9

Rugby league is on the cusp of clearing the final impediment for the relaunch of the NRL premiership on May 28 following a major development in broadcast negotiations.

The ARL Commission on Tuesday approved the code’s revised broadcast deal as the Project Apollo committee moves a step closer to relaunching the NRL premiership on May 28.

News Corp can reveal the ARLC has rubber-stamped the terms of the TV rights contract, the completion of which remains the final impediment to the NRL kicking-off on Thursday week.

The Commission met on Tuesday with the panel members, including chairman Peter V’landys, discussing the relevant components of the broadcast deal before giving the green light for the contract to be sent to TV partners Channel 9 and Fox Sports.

The broadcasting stakeholders will now hold their respective board meetings over the coming days to give their final approval to the TV rights deal that will steer rugby league out of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is understood Channel 9 will maintain their commitment to the NRL until the end of 2022, scuppering fears they would walk away from the code.

Channel 9 have baulked at a long-term extension, although that scenario is palatable to Fox, who are prepared to ink a four or five-year extension to remain loyal to rugby league until 2026-27.

Any broadcast deal of around $280-300 million per annum is considered an excellent outcome by experts in sports broadcasting negotiations.

V’landys told News Corp last week he was adamant he would deliver a broadcasting deal that would safeguard NRL clubs and ensure the resurrection of the premiership on Thursday week.

Today, he has officially succeeded.

“The broadcast deal will be resolved before May 28,” he said recently.

“I won’t be talking figures through the media, but I am confident with our position and what we have put forward to the broadcasters.

“We have done a lot of hard work on this.

“I believe a resolution will be found.”

V’landys conceded there was some concern free-to-air giant Channel 9 would sever its 30-year association with rugby league.

“I’ve taken Channel 9 from not wanting to be in the game to being committed for the next three years. It has been a hard slog to be honest with you,” he said.

“We’re still dealing on the extension side of things, there will be an extension with Fox, definitely.

“We won’t have all the final details done, but we will have the dollars in place, which is the most important thing for me to begin planning how much money we can distribute to the clubs and the players.”

Tell ch9 ,okee, dokee after 2022, don't slam the door on your departure.Deep down you've been pushing the AFL barrow ,as the home of Rugby League. The crap thrown at the NRL this year by management, is way over the top, for an organisation supposedly a business partner.
Wait and see.I'll bet my unos that Nein will bid for the AFL from 2023.

To me it sounds like (and I may well be wrong )V'landys has told Nein to get rogered on trying to get the Digital Dept. Please say it is so.
The Telegraph story leaves out a lot re values for each broadcaster, and what has happened ,yes or no with digital.

If true $280-300 mill is a drop of about $50-30million a year in current deal. Nice when you can renegotiate a contract in the middle of the term because you don’t want to pay as much anymore! I hope we are getting something out of this deal.

Exactly.Expecting an increase or maintaining the same money from broadcasters with this financial and health disaster around us, has rocks in their head.

We had some, suggesting what is going on is not as bad as the 2008 GFC, sheesh.

Many public companies are not even paying dividends which were expected.

The AFL will be taking a financial hit via 7 and fox,yet that will be brushed aside as nothing. The ARU can't even get ATM someone to fork out any money, and the hey hey it's Saturday League is suffering ditto. That bleeding NRL can't negotiate a decent deal will be the cry.

Also the AFL has lost Virgin.Soccer Hyundai.Union their marbles.

With onionball looking like it will keel over at the pro level now is the time to reduce the salary cap and add extra teams. The RLPA will look like numpties if they want a select few to squeeze every last cent out of the NRL each year and in doing so, prevent an extra 100 players from earning a living.
