However whats stopping Nine from streaming games onto the pay platform via Stan.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.stan.and&hl=en-AU
The NRL own the steaming rights to ALL EIGHT games? No? Of course they do. They have 'licened Kayo and Foxtel GO to stream all eight games, but the NRL can give away the 8 games. The situation today is that KAYO and Foxtel stream Nine games NOW.

Foxtel cant because all eight games are NOT exclusive, especially from a Mobile/Android standpoint and then streamed to your TV.

They wont be able to stream all 8, that is where the value for Fox is with KAYO being their future. Fox havent just signed an extension to see all 8 games streamed on a rival streaming service lol. Its why they have been happy to take a $100milion hit by not selling to Telstra who were basically a rival for KAYO by streaming it for free to customers.

At best the FTA can stream the three they pay for, if they put it on Stan or 9Now is irrelevant really, people arent going to buy Stan for three games they could watch for free on FTA .

So no, I dont believe the NRL does own the rights to onsell all 8 games to another streaming service, that is what Fox has just bought with its extension.

Quote from SMH story above
"The Foxtel extension, said by sources to be worth about $1 billion, allows subscription service Kayo to stream all eight matches. Should Nine, owner of this masthead, also agree to an extension until 2027, all games will be available through the television channel and 9Now streaming app. Telstra customers can currently access games for free through the NRL app and Telstra Live Pass."
Whats to stop them also puting it on stan, it increases the value of Stan or attract new subscribers so they will pay more to the NRL.
What does the Bolded/highlighted sentence mean? Nine to have all games.

They are talking about the fta games only, not all games.

9now already streams the ch9 games they have since 2018. You could see 9 or another fta station get the digital rights to all games to show on mobiles and tablets with the 7inch screen size limits.
Telstra wont have any digital rights after 2022.

When it says "all games" it means the 3 they produce, not the 5 Fox produces.
But that is like it is now. Nine have 3 streamed- online streaming rights- foxtel have 8 internet online streaming and TELSTRA have all 8 games limited/restricted to Ipads PADS Mobile phones ( note it was not always that way- you could cast it to your tv)
So now the NRL have got ridden to Telstra as a streamer. Every article/story says so. The NRL can on sell the rights to streaming ALL eight games. Thats what the story says. This is a masterstroke by Vlandy or a ace in the hole for the deal with with either Nine or 10 or some other sports streamer if they want to bid.

Be logical, Fox will be pretty much just a streaming service at some point in this 8 year contract. Do you think they are going to let NRL sell in direct competition to KAYO after they have just signed a $1billion deal?
Lets say your right and NRL could do that and sold the streaming rights for all games to nine who then showed them for free on its streaming platform. How many KAYO subscribers do you think that would impact? Or even worse for Fox someone like DAZN or ESPN bought them and bundled them with a Disney or Netflix. That would literally kill Fox's future as a paytv company in Australia. I'll be amazed if NRL can sell all 8 games streaming to anyone, it would literally be suicide for Fox to allow that. Fox's only hope for survival is to get Binge and KAYO to a point where it is a big subscription service at a decent price point. The two will be bundled together for subscription.

As for the Telstra decision that would be a Fox decision that NRl are happy to endorse as doesnt matter to them. With the financial position of Fox they arent going to turn down $100mill from Telstra unless they feel they have no choice. And they dont as they need exclusive streaming rights to survive the shift in subscription platforms.

You've been telling us for last two years the next TV deal will be nowhere near the last, and for the last few months Covid means the days of big money TV contracts are over. Now you are saying that Fox is going to pay MORE? That's a big swing lol.

Which proves that V'Landys didn't get screwed as you continually propose, because he secured a big money deal from 2023-2027 with what is going on in the economy.Yep I'm surprised the deal is that figure, considering what is going on .
When you spend every waking hour bagging any deal V'Landys makes.

I'm not saying it ,I'm citing the comments in the Australian(News publication).Again considering the COVID-19 impact which you seem to think is just a passing phase of a bad flu.Getting $1bn if true for 5 years in advance ,when the Australian Treasury is stating it's going to take 5-7 years to get back to normality ,is hardly getting screwed .
V'Landys deserves some kudos ,but you just can't admit the fact.

I've said it a number of times now, if the deal really is $200mill a year 2023-2027 I will totally eat humble pie and laud Vladys as a genius. I just cant see it given Fox's financial position and uncertainty around its market share of streaming and the much lower price point of KAYO.

The secondary consideration is what did we give away to get that, if we did, and what impact will that have on the FTA deal 2023 onwards. We know Fox paid Nine considerably for simucast and Saturday night games. If they have been bundled into this deal then that is an overall saving for Fox of around $40mil a year. It would however significantly decrease the FTA value and reduce the NRL's FTA deal from the $175mill Smith negotiated giving us potentially a much lower deal for 23-27.

Say Nine renews the contract ( forget the money side) From memory Nine had 3 games broadcast/TV then Foxtel payed for simicast ( which must have included Nines 3 games PLUS their 3 games they had exclusivly. So it was Nine who gave thier exclusive to Foxtel which they show now on KAyo. The current deal is structured without Nine at this stage. So when NIne buy again 3 games it looks like simulcast will be inbuilt/included. But the situation changes with online streaming. Fisrst they got rid on Telstra, so when Nine buy games they cant NOW have exclusivity ( As Kayo shows all 8 ) even Nines games they bought, so now I think that all games can be show by Foxtel and Nine.

Well you'd better discuss with the Australian journo, who specifically kept the $1bn for 5 years ,separate form the 8 year Tv deal in toto.
In any Tv deal there is usually give and take, and more so when we have an economy busted. V'Landys would have had to make concessions ,which we know he did with the 2020-2022 discounts for both Nein and Foxsports. We know he kept the Digital, so it may well be as Foxsports was desperate for NRL content they agreed to the 5 years and $1bn extension.
Ch9 is sh*t scared ATM to extend ,until they know the lie of the land, and based on what Tresury has stated, it's not looking good for at least 5-7 years.
Smith gave AFL the opening for Murdoch to add on to the AFL deal,That has been acknowledged by more than a couple of journos. He would have done no better than V'Landys plus Abdo in today's environment.V'Landys knows rugby league ,Smith had no real affinity for the game, and coming form a non sporting business background.

Just to add How hard is it to get your sport going.
Financial probelms arise.
Court action taken, who wins, I know usually the lawyers.

From the australian insert.

Cricket is now officially fighting a war on three fronts after delivering a pay offer to Australian players on Wednesday that has players questioning Cricket Australia’s good faith and has triggered a dispute that could end in court.

CA is already out of favour with staff who have been stood down and state bodies facing big funding cuts. Now players are outraged by suggestions of a massive drop in revenue , which will reduce their share of the pie.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-...les-while-the-code-burns-20200604-p54zdv.html

SANZAAR is imploding; the Kiwis are plotting to control what is left of Super Rugby in the Pacific; Rugby Australia has just announced a 40 per cent cut in staff after staving off insolvency, yet interim chief executive Rob Clarke says that now is “a nice opportunity” to resurrect the game in this country.

It’s difficult not to think of Nero. After all, the immediate past RA chief executives Bill Pulver and Raelene Castle, together with their chairmen, Michael Hawker, Cameron Clyne and Paul McLean, have all fiddled while the code burned.

From the A league- still no contract_foxtel to pay a quater. no start, no money, players revolt.
A-League players have confirmed their priority is to finish the 2019-20 season but want to see a long-term model of the game’s finances before accepting a pay cut.

After initial reports from News Corp players could face an 80 percent reduction in pay for the season when Football Federation Australia (FFA) were denied by the FFA, the players union, the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), chief, John Didulica said players want to return to finish the season.

“There is no percentage figure or dollar amount that is a magical number,” Didulica said.

“This is about understanding what needs to be done to rebuild the season, get a running start into next season and each of us fairly sharing the burden that comes with our shared challenges, which are as much health as they are financial.

“The players want to return to training and are understandably vocal about needing an imminent resolution,” he said.

The reports of an 80 percept pay cut for players was originally reported after FFA announced it would reduce cash distribution to clubs from the final quarter of the organisations’ TV deal.

I'ts a tale of whoa, threatened court action, empty pockets and if ( super Rugby goonne ) if the a league will survive.

What’s link to that news article?

All I've kept is a cut out bits of the Australian by Leo Shanahan, which doesn't show dates, so being the generous guy that I am ,if you are patient I give the keyboard a good basho.
:"
$1bn NRL broadcast deal kicks off
A new $1bn-plus NRL broadcast deal has been finalised that sees Fox Sports commit to the code fro another 8 years but has undercut Nine's planned cost savings from this year's shortened season.
The announcement of a new broadcast deal came on Thursday night, just an hour from the kickoff of the resumed 2020 season in a clash between Parramatta and the Broncos.
Under a discounted deal with the code following the disastrous impact of COVID-19,Fox Sports have extended theri deal to secure NRL for another 8 years for an undisclosed amount, believed to be around $200m a year after 2022.

Nine opted not to extend its current rights beyond 2022 at this stage.
Fox Sports was due to pay about $190m this year while Nine was due to pay about $90-$100m.
But Fox and nine are under stood to have been given a 30 per cent discount on their deal until the end of 2022.
With the discount the two networks could save almost $200m between them over the next three years. This would see Fox sports pay around $133m a season and Nine pay $60-70m,

According to the ASX statement on Thursday evening Nine Entertainment would save about $27.5m a year on their original deal, but with the season going ahead this reduces originally forecast cost savings for this year by $64m.
As a result of the recommencement of the nRL season ,Nine has revised previous cost commentary. On March 30 2020,Nine highlighted a series of cost initiatives in CY20 that totalled cash savings of $266m, a number that was subsequently increased to $289m on May 5.
These estimates included a $130m saving as a result of the cancellation of NRL season 2020.
With this newly committed 2020 season cost, the prevailing cash cost out guidance of $289m is reduced to $225m the statement said."

The rest is a lot of V'Landys and Marks commenting ,which has no bearing on the above, except back slapping and getting on with the show.

From a Roy Masters article in May:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/fo...ure-in-tv-merry-go-round-20200506-p54qal.html

Still, Foxtel would be delighted to own all of the broadcasting of rugby league, rebranding the pay TV network NRL TV, making it a one-stop shop for the code.

Yes, but what about anti-siphoning laws? Doesn’t the federal government insist nationally interesting sports be available free to viewers?

Rugby league would once again be effectively owned by Rupert but would NRL clubs care if they were paid a motza?

Channel Ten would be interested in the two games a week the NRL is committed to show on FTA TV, the finals and Origin.

But Global Sport and Media’s Colin Smith has come up with a scenario far more lucrative for Foxtel and one Murdoch would blow his already overburdened budget to make happen.

“Foxtel could offer matches currently on the anti-siphoning list to Kayo,” said Smith of Foxtel’s streaming service, which has leaked thousands of subscribers since March when NRL and AFL competitions stopped.

“Subscribers wouldn’t pay anything. They would simply select the matches that are free and opt out of the other Foxtel matches and sports programs.

“Sure, they would have to have the Foxtel streaming service installed but it would be zero cost to them.

“It becomes an excellent marketing tool for Foxtel, with the aim viewers will eventually pay for the matches not on the anti-siphoning list, just as subscribers tailor their Foxtel packages to meet their budgets.”

From another Masters article on May 4th with John Grant:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/two-bi...ital-arm-grant-warns-nrl-20200503-p54pcb.html

Grant calculates that if the NRL converted half its existing 1.6 million digital customers into $25-per-month subscribers, and had a free-to-air broadcaster pay a fair but lesser price than Nine pays now - plus monetises other available revenue streams - it could produce annual revenue of over $360m with advertising offsetting production costs.
