A-league joins Rugby Union in going down the FTA TV + streaming service route. In this case it will be hcannel 10 and Paramount+

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-26/a-league-announces-new-broadcast-partner-channel-10/100166894

Unlike the rugby deal, this doesn't include anything outside of the A-league and W-league competitions.

Is this something the NRL should look at?

My feeling is no given the driver for both rugby and the A-league in negotiating such a deal was FTA exposure which the NRL has plenty of. I must say I have not seen a single pub/club broadcast a rugby game that was exclusive to Stan either.

An idea I do like though is negotiating with channel 9 to put some of the games lower tier content on Stan like NSW/QLD cup etc.

It'll be interesting to see if the A-league are keen on a better FTA profile here in New Zealand.
Due to the absence of anti-syphoning laws here, any coverage is at the whims of the sports - and until very recently it's pretty much put everything to Sky.

We started to see chinks in that with NZ Cricket breaking ranks to go streaming (NZ Cricket via Spark Sport), and a few games live on TVNZ as something nice to those who can't/won't buy it.. but how many other sports are willing to sacrifice a bit of money for better FTA exposure?

Unfortunately one of the articles mentioned that Ten have agreed for the term of the Aleague agreement not to bid on NRL or AFL.

That’s a real shame, both in terms of competitive bidding driving the price up bit more importantly someone other than nine getting the rights and reinvigorating fta coverage.

Spark has got an impressive line up of sports in its package and adding NRL seems a good step as long as its not exclusive and one or two games a week get sold to FTA.

For historical reference NRL sign new 5 years Sky NZ deal. Rumoured to be $164million over 5 years.

State of Origin fixtures and a selection of premium NRL matches will be available on free-to-air TV in New Zealand for the first time in a new broadcast rights deal between the ARL Commission and Sky New Zealand.
As part of the deal that will extend to the end of 2027, selected games during Anzac Round and Magic Round will be available on free-to-air television.

Sky TV says it has signed a new NRL deal covering games through to the end of 2027.
The deal covers NRL, State of Origin and all the NZRL-run matches involving the Kiwis and the Kiwi Ferns rugby league teams.
"We commit to making some important matches available free-to-access," Sky said in a statement. Which? "We're working through those details. The likes of the Anzac test sound just about right, chief executive Sophie Moloney told the Herald.
After gaining the cricket rights, Spark Sport said it was seeking a major winter sport as an anchor for its platform.
"We would very much like to carry a tier-one winter sport going forward," Spark Sport boss Jeff Latch told the Herald in April.
According to Nielsen, some 1.1 million New Zealanders have tuned in to at least one NRL game this year.
League was the last of the Big Four sports up for grabs as Spark Sport tussled with Sky.
Sky secured rugby and netball, and now league, while the pair have split cricket rights.

A question on the Sky NZ deal. How can the ARLC sign a TV contract for NZRL run Kiwi and Kiwi Fern matches? Aren't those rights for the NZRL to sell?

I suspect its part of the agreeemnt they have with the ARLC whch seems them receive funding?
I wonder if the NRL has to pay Fox and Ch9 some of this funding to be able to sell their content to SkyNZ?

NEW FREE-TO-AIR DEAL BECKONS

Covid will not stop the NRL from doing a new free-to-air television deal this year.

We can reveal independent commission chairman Peter V’landys and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo have a meeting scheduled with Channel 9 boss Mike Sneesby this week via zoom.

Even if no decision is made on expansion and a 17th team out of Brisbane, the NRL is keen to secure a five-year agreement. They are also in talks with Channels 10 and 7.

Seven has shown via its multichannel Olympics coverage out of Tokyo their capabilities to cover both the AFL and NRL seasons.

Ten has secured the rights to cover Australian soccer in a $200 million five-year deal to broadcast one A-League game each week on free to air and the rest on their streaming service Paramount+.

They are still keen to broadcast NRL on Thursday and Friday nights and Sunday afternoons.

Heres hoping Ten and Seven can put in good bids. We need a FTA partner that will help the game rather than treat it the way Nein does.

Need to get a game onto FTA on Saturday night. Absolute must. Can no longer keep going with no presence on an entire day where games are played

cough, ninth game, cough.
I suspect Vlandys has already sold Saturday exclusivity to Fox though in the rushed deal he made.

Nine to face fight for NRL rights as V’landys seeks to capitalise on TV stability

By Zoe Samios

The Australian Rugby League Commission is expected to allow all three television networks to bid on free-to-air rights for the National Rugby League following early stage talks with incumbent broadcast partner Nine Entertainment Co.
Nine executives made a formal presentation to ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo last week, proposing a renewal of their existing rights deal with the code and outlining their plans for the future.

According to industry sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks were confidential, Mr V’landys did not accept or reject the proposal, but raised concerns about a lack of promotion for rugby league by the company. Nine is the owner of this masthead, and also controls radio, streaming and digital assets.
Mr V’landys and Mr Abdo’s expected decision to take the NRL rights to the market aims to to capitalise on the renewed financial stability for Nine’s free-to-air rivals, Seven West Media and Network Ten, which were challenged during negotiations last year. The pair have also indicated they are considering splitting the free-to-air rights for the NRL and other tournaments - like State of Origin - between multiple networks, an option Nine strongly opposes.

Nine and Mr V’landys declined to comment. Nine and the NRL renegotiated their existing contract last May in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The television company secured a discount on its deal due to a lack of crowds and temporary suspension of games.
Tensions between the NRL and Nine erupted when former Nine CEO Hugh Marks launched a stinging attack on the code’s leadership last April, describing it as a “bloated head office completely ignoring the needs of the clubs, players and supporters.” Those comments put pressure on then-NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg, who stepped down from the role 11 days later. Mr Marks resigned from Nine last year.
The NRL free-to-air rights are the biggest television rights property to be up for grabs this year. Foxtel, which provides 66 per cent of the NRL’s broadcast revenue, decided to extend its pay TV deal with the code to 2027 during last May’s negotiations. Nine did not extend its agreement, but said at the time would save $27.5 million in 2021 and again in 2022 under its renegotiated deal.
Seven and Ten have not received any formal documentation about the rights. But both networks have held informal talks with the NRL, multiple industry sources said. ViacomCBS and Ten executive vice-president Beverly McGarvey said in an interview with this masthead this week that the network would look at the NRL rights.
“Well, we have always said that we will look at all sports on a tactical basis, which remains the case and continues to be the truth. I think the interesting thing now is the tactical basis on which we examine the opportunity has moved,” she said.

“Every time the big sports come around, we have a really good look at them. These things only come around once every four or five years so you’ve got to do a good bit of analysis on anything.”
Interest from all broadcasters is not unusual in the early stages of rights negotiations. Networks and sporting negotiations typically fight over a range of terms, but it is rare that long term relationships between major sports and broadcasters are not renewed. Nine has held rugby league rights for more than three decades.
For its part, Nine believes it has a strong proposition because it can cross-promote the NRL and State of Origin across its other assets, such as radio and print newspapers. The company remains hopeful it will secure an extension of the rights.
Failure of Nine and the NRL to secure an extension was despite a decision by the NRL to block Telstra from broadcasting games for free to its customers, which was considered a way to increase the value of the rights for a potential free-to-air partner.
The financial stability of media companies has changed substantially since last May when the deals were secured. NRL clubs were told in February that Ten was not in a position to make a bid last year, while Seven’s offer was only half that of Nine. But the NRL has since said that it was expecting Nine, Seven and Ten to all bid for the league’s free-to-air rights as it prepared for a profit in the new financial year.

When the NRL locked in an extension with Foxtel and Kayo Sports last year, the News Corp- controlled pay TV company was the only major player in the sports streaming market. Since then, Amazon Prime Video, Nine’s Stan and Paramount+ have entered the sports arena and successfully acquired the rights to sport. The inability for Nine and Ten to secure a deal for their own streaming services will likely limit the amount they are willing to bid.

Just a reminder to base next deal on. nine paid $185mill a year (inc around $10mill contra a year)
They then clawed $50mill a year back by on selling the Saturday game back to Fox ($15mill a year) and selling the simucast rights to fox for their three games ($35mill a year).
This gives an actual cost to Nine of around $125mill cash a year.
The last two years of the deal were further reduced in renegotiations by approx $27.5mill a year due to covid.

Really hope the chickens have come home to roost for Nein. Good start that V'landys calling them out on promotion is being printed in their own rag.

No promotion? Last year they filled their media with how sht the game was and how badly run it is. Don’t they say no such thing as bad publicity?
