The two regional clubs that were in trouble were Newcastle and Gold Coast. Newcastle were bought by Wests Newcastle whilst another Brisbane side should have been preferred to Gold Coast.

Nevertheless these areas are expanding rapidly, much more than some areas of Sydney.

Canberra and North Queensland are doing better financially than a fair few Sydney sides.

Nevertheless, this is a bit off topic as the next sides aren’t going to be (or shouldn’t be) more regional sides or Sydney sides.

They shouldn't be but Sydney clubs aren't struggling

You do realise the Sharks own the land the Stadium is on?
Banked $100m from the development

What assets do NQ have?
Owning land doesn't mean shit if it doesn't generate an income to support the football team!

Cowboys are investing in properties, FYI. Their CofE is poised to make them money.

Dolphins are a powerhouse because they make money from a shopping precinct they own.

Sharks tried to follow suit by creating a retail district, but were forced to sell their stake in it to pay off debts. Now they're back to relying on pokies and have doubled down by buying a licenced golf club in Kareela and trying to get a licenced Club in Coffs Harbour.

Sharks got $12m to build their Leagues Club, plus an upfront payment of $9m to pay off debts. Another $18m will be paid over 12 years -- $1.5m annually -- in a fund.

Yes do you think the golf club they invested in. Lets people play for free?

What about those people living in the apartments on the land, They can eat for free in the new Leagues club when it opens?

All teams are investing outside of footy

You said they got $100m from land development. That's pure BS. All they got was a fast tracked payment of $9m to pay off debt, $1.5m pa over 12 years via a fund and $12m to develop their Leagues Club. In total that's $39m. They won't make any more money from the retail development as they sold their stake for just $39m!

According to their annual reports they both have a net asset base of $47.1mill. Is the stadium sitting on the books of a totally different company?

Donkey whats the $20mill loan Cowboys have being used for?

Do you read the annual reports?

Cowboys got $8.9m from their sponsors last year.

Sharks got just $4m from their sponsors.

Cowboys play at a state of the art stadium. Sharks play out of a shithole.

To argue that the Sharks are bigger than Cowboys is delusional and a sign that the person making the claim doesn't know anything.
Regional clubs are worth less to tv

you know that look at the afl deal which you believe is true

they have one regional club the rest are all city teams

Nothing will likely happen on any relocation front. The only chance of it happening would be one of the NSW clubs really falling over and with the grant as high as it is, it would require really gross economic mismanagement
But multiple posters will still talk about it as an option

Which doesn't mean it is wrong to have Regional teams, Just that the funding structure is different

Plus they got commercial shops at the ground which rent for like 1 million pa

and used the money to buy that golf club at Kareela

and there’s nothing stopping them selling the rest of their ground in the future for 100 million

'pointed to the club’s rugby league operations having a $5.5 million deficit last year.'

Ouch! Good job they have pokies and aren't relying on the football club being sustainable! Shame the FC isnt pulling its weight and that $5-6mil a year they spend on the NRL club couldn't be spent on the local community to justify the tax breaks they get and social misery they cause.
Panthers group have done a good job to turn it around from where they were a decade ago when they were broke. As long as addicts keep feeding the machines they'll be right.

No it doesnt, there is great value in them, especially when our game is #1 in two states with large regional population centres.
But it clearly doesn't translate into value for tv and sponsors and our decisions to abandon capital cities for regional areas has ultimately cost us big time. We need to get that sorted. We could end up in a better position eventually if we can get all the major capital cities covered AND the larger regional centres AND NZ. But that will take a 20-22 team comp, or relocations.

One thing RL has never lacked is potential, realising that potential continues to be our Achilles heel!

Penrith are literally the benchmark of what all nrl clubs should look like

if we had 16 clubs like Penrith the game would be bulletproof

vlandys has gone his job funding them as well as he has but many clubs have done nothing with the money

and Penrith for a long time were actually a regional club until the Sydney sprawl caught up with them

it’s funny when people who know nothing of Sydney consider them a Sydney club
