Pretty much. What the NRL needs to realize is Nine and Fox are not friends to the game. They are there to do a business. And that is how the NRL should approach the next deal. No more favours to anyone.

The key takeaway from all of this is to actually to foster relationships with all networks and encourage them in turn to bid. There is no point in locking out potential options by having seperate negotiations.

Also, to be fair, the coverage on both networks is incredibly stale and is not often very complimentary of the game. They have not really supported the game very well over the years, not just financially of course but also in terms of PR. So I would be subtly reminding them of this during the negotiations.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the coverage will be better on another network (refer to cricket and Channel 7) but still I think these relationships have run their course (to be fair probably ran their course 5 -10 years ago)

The NRL should be in talks and build relationships with all networks and providers from today. Don't start talking to them in a couple of years time, because you may miss the boat. When the NRL officially does have a tender process, then many of those talks with all networks and providers be well in advance.

As for Nine and Fox, they have become stale because the networks have taken the NRL for granted for well over 20 years. The Nine/Fox duopoly has to end sooner rather than later for the game's sake.

The game is crying out for someone new to come in.

Treat them more as enemies and look to make at least one of them lose the rights even if it’s for a little less money

nine especially their coverage is pathetic

Yeah but you need FTA coverage purely for exposure purposes

Ten now they missed out on the fumbleball but sure they aren’t as keen

maybe in a few years they will realise they need a major Australian sport leaving nine with the union

Also to be fair they are out of practice with TV coverage of a major sport, Their F1 coverage was poor. Atleast can practice with the A League for a couple of years before it is time to talk

Why would you negotiate with them at different times - this is exactly why we are in this mess

I wonder exactly how much FTA is really essential, is it really a case of the more the better.
Good point

since foxtel is getting similar ratings to nine for games it would suggest it’s hugely overrated but there’s anti siphoning so they don’t have a chance to change it

they should try and get origins and the gf streamed also on fox fox would pay for that handsomely

I think the mix is right now, Just enough to hopefully convert casuals across to a team and build it from there
Super Rugby is perfect example of the decline you get from no FTA at all

RL fans have Kayo or Fox. You can't watch the games otherwise. Those FTA are casuals that aren't fans yet

Agree - with Kayo as cheap as it is, FTA is not really a necessity. What would be amazing (although AFL will probably do it first) is having the FTA component or the entire rights given to a YouTube.

and those without access to internet? That is why FTA exists

FTA is still relevant to the older generation and the flickers. I also question the actual reported audience numbers. Its a very small sample size and pretty unreliable if you ask me.

Gives biggest exposure to any sport. No other medium is getting soo or gf numbers
