I don't think Australia as a whole has made the changes required, What's changed since Optus had that failed WC? That was a farce and I am not sure 500-600k people streaming a Live sporting event is possible yet

The Optus debacle didn't impact people who watched the FIFA World Cup on Fetch. I was able to watch all games in HD on Fetch. The other delivery platforms were the issue.

I've labelled PVL gullible for being played by Nine and Fox. He didn't had to extend Fox's contract in particular for five years at the height of Covid. He could've just said to Fox,
" how about we extend for another three years and all up we are together for another five years. In this situation we need to be fluid. Pandemic could end tomorrow". Or words to that effect.

Despite this, IMO what Smith did back in 2015 was worse for a couple of reasons. Firstly, without the pressure of a pandemic and in relative peactime, Smith decided to announce a FTA deal with Nine which included all of the key timeslots- Thurs night, Fri night, Sat night and Sun arvo. It left Fox with scraps.

And he didn't complete the deal. Where was the subscription side of it? Fox were peeved off and in the end, Smith lost his job. And because of Smith's mistake, the game didnt fully maximise its revenue potential of the 2018-2022 deal.

Secondly, if Smith and the NRL played their cards right card and maximised the 2018-2022 deal, then things could've been different.

Fast forward to 2020, the game is in lockdown due to the pandemic. If Smith did the right thing back in 2015, then who knows, the NRL might've had another $100 or $200 million in savings. In this situation, the NRL has more financial security to fend off a pandemic and could've had less pressure to get the game back on the field. And Nine and Fox would not have taken advantage of the game.

It's easy to point the finger at the current mob in charge. But the game's administrative predecessors should never be forgotten either for their triumphs or failures.

Foxtel will always whinge when they don't get a deal that is favourable to them. Murdoch has been a ruthless negotiator since he was young.

AwFuL has an ally in Ch7 as the network is owned by a Western Australian who loves the game. Ch9 doesn't give a f**k about our game and has gone as far as to scheme behind our back and openly bully us via their platform during COVID-19.

Our game needs to stop appeasing the broadcasters. I'd rather see us take a hit by producing all of our content and streaming it online via an NRL app and on-selling a simulcast of the content to FTA and other streaming services. Ch9 and Foxtel would be the biggest losers in that scenario and would come running back.

I'm of the opposite. Smith delivered a FTA deal worth $185mill, more than the AFL managed at the time and only just matched this time around by them in their mega deal. ANd all we were selling was what they were already selling Seven.

We have all been saying for years that Fox cant survive without us, a fact doubled down on by pistol pete in recent times. That was the time to have had the balls to put that to the test! I'm of the mind that all the NRL's talk about digital platforms at the time was to show them that if they didnt come to the party we'd go it alone on streaming our own content. Fox would have eventually bowed down, they really had no choice. KAYO was launched on the back of this deal. Good luck with that now if it didnt have NRL!

We had $185+20 sky already in the bank. Anything over $180mill from Fox would have seen us get more than we ended up with anyway. Only part of his deal I disagreed with was Nine being able to sell Sat back to Fox. NRL would have benefitted from having a Sat FTA game. All we got was $385mill, its not like backing down tot hem delivered us a big pay day. Ch9 payment went down from $185 to $125mill under the renegotiated deal!

We got dudded in the 2017 deal because the ARLC didn't have the balls to stare down Fox, and here we are again..........

In theory more as its delivers a separate time slot so an extra X hundred thousand viewers every round. AFL reckoned their ninth game brought in $52million in TV value.
If we can get $30mill for a ninth game on top of the alleged $20mill the 17th club brought in we'd be going ok. Given club grants are going to be $15mill plus, $20mill isnt giving much return.

Move Friday 6pm to Sunday 6pm (can't believe this isn't permanent). It's a rubbish slot and it's not even good for TV (most people are either stuck on the M4/M5 or on a train platform at this time of day).

The ARLC should use this as an opportunity to produce their own content and broadcast the extra game via the NRL and official club applications. It would open up another membership category for clubs by provide their paid members with access to this game. If all people can gain an annual pass to watch the ninth game by becoming a club member then we could see clubs increasing their membership base to more thanks 50k members.

If everything goes to plan then clubs will have a steady revenue stream that makes them less dependent on the annual grant. It will also allow the more popular clubs to grow. If a club is allowed to screen advertising from their sponsors during game play then it increases the value of sponsorship.

The Friday 6pm is purely for Fox. They get people to watch at least the second half for
