Didn't even know it was on until a few days beforehand in Perth, never really watch Channel 7 however.
With FTA dying there will have to be new and different ways of marketing than the old contra ads. Only way the masses will know somethings happening. Look at how streaming is now advertising shows everywhere like on buses, airplane screens, bus stops etc.

The footy codes have consistent times each week that at least allow fans to look up expecting games.

The sporadic nature of the cricket scheduling is a big issue for them. Surely they need to be smashing targeted adds on the social media platforms ......

yes I know that but they've sold 12 of the 24 new games a ninth game brings already lol. That will prevent them selling the ninth game to anyone other than the incumbents. 2028 would be the earliest they could sell the ninth game to someone else.

No. Because they are STILL going to be adding 12 games to the year for a new team that could be broadcast by anyone. Dude this isnt rocket science.

For instance: they could create Monday Night or Sunday Night Football specifically for it - but only 12 nights a year

Good luck selling the other 12 games in the ninth spot separately lol. You'd be selling half a season of one game a week to someone else.
What they can do is get more money from the two incumbents for the extra 12 games and the added value of the 24 now being played in a new time additional time slot.
No one is buying one game for half a season on its own lol

Im not saying its likely, I am sayhing its possible. And it would certainly affect the deal as it would not currently be included.

They've only sold a package of 12 extra games spread across the season. Each round will still have eight games maximum. There is no new timeslot because there is no ninth game yet so NO they haven't sold the 9th weekly game or the timeslot for it. Do you understand?

When the 18th team comes in the NRL has to sell the extra 12 (not the 12 games already sold but an additional 12 games) the 18th team generates. But if they extend the season by only 1 round so that it's a 25 round season then they get an extra 9 games on top of that. So now they have to 21 games. But hold on - if they go to a Top 9 or a Top 10 finals format they get another 2 games. So they now have 23 games to sell - not 12. When you factor in byes for origin, that is a full season of games in a brand new timeslot.

You really think 9 or Foxtel will want those 21 regular season games and 2 finals matches going to Channel 7 or 10? It splits apart their stranglehold on the sport.

Interesting thoughts and ideas. An extra team and round. If Fox and Nine weren't interested or got outbid, then you would hope that a network gets the rights to that 22 game package you referred to, rather than another streaming provider. You don't want to give fans another bill to pay.

Have a look at football:
Optus-EPL and La Liga
Stan- Champions League
Paramount- A League.

Fragmentation at it's worst. Too many providers to pay, and the A League is left isolated.
Yeah I'm anti-fragmentation but to bring in competitive tension for renegotiations it's the only way.

This is no good for fox and all of the streaming services...
Early days. You have to wait and see how many games end up getting listed before you can determine the impact it has. Say if the NRL goes from 3 weekly FTA games to 4 (which they should be doing anyway) the effective will be minor as they will adding a 5th exclusive subscription game when the 18th team is added. Honestly, 5 games or more on FTA is hard for a FTA network to pull off unless the coverage is split across 2 networks - but then those networks are splitting the halo.

Most likely what will happen is for the NRL to have a full time FTA Saturday game. You could end up with 4 FTA games a week. But the code will expand to 9 games a week. Perhaps a possible return of Monday night football.

The thing that annoys me is that the communications minister was concerned about the AFL reducing it's FTA exposure on Saturdays.

But what about another sport like Football where it is fragmented across 4 different platforms- Kayo, Stan, Optus and Paramount. This certainly doesn't help the local competition, the A League.

Sounds like an absolute no-brainer, what the heck, email it in to the NRL.
Oh for the days when you could write a letter to League headquarters and get a response.
Like I did in 1984 during my first year at Uni when I wrote a letter addressed to John Quayle NSWRL and he responded within a week to me by letter personally, thanked me and said any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. Still have the letter.

I wrote.a letter to them once in around early 2000 and they used all but one of my ideas

No thanks mind you

I also emailed Roy masters way back and said once regional viewers were included rugby league beat afl and he basically used a lot of my argument for an article

emailing journos you can often get a response back. I just would never bother with the news ltd germs

At the very least what we can all do is come up with ideas on this site, and here's hoping that someone from within the NRL would be reading it.

Wow that`s amazing. Once in the early 2000`s when Roy was writing a lot of negative articles about the future of League following the departure of the traitors Sailor and Tuiquiri I got hold of him on a talkback radio programme and gave him a real blast. I can almost remember the bizarre exchange we had word for word.
Me: " the last thing the game needs now is you writing negative things about the games future ".
Roy: " you must be a Sharks supporter ". Stunned silence from me, didn`t know where that came from.
Me: " no I`m a Saint George supporter ". Stunned silence from Roy because I don`t think St. George supporters were meant to criticise Roy.
Me again : " where`s Warren Ryan when you need him " a reference to when Ryan thumped Roy in the grandstand at Newcastle and I hung up.
But I swear until this day his articles were not so pessimistic in the following weeks. Sometimes these blokes just need to be told.

this forum is on a tangent to rugby league reality
