He’s right if parra was as sucesful as the roosters they would just about sell out every game at commbank and the bigger games would need to go to homebush
I keep hearing this but I have my doubts

In the last 6 seasons Parra have finished 4th, last, 5th, 3rd, 6th, 4th. They have made a GF and made the 2nd week of semis 4 other times. Winning a comp is the ultimate criteria for success but apart from the obvious outlier, that is a successful period by any definition. By comparison we have finished in that same time 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Obviously we managed to win 2 comps in that time but the last 3 years Parra have been more successful.

I'm not convinced that Parra winning the 2017 or 2019 comps as an example would have seen them have higher crowds than they got. Believing your team has a genuine chance at winning which has been the case for Parra a long time now is as motivating for fans as actually winning one.

As much as it pains me to say it IMO Parramatta have the largest amount of supporters in Sydney followed closely by the Dogs...

I think this was evident in the Prelim crowds since 2009.

Dogs V Eels - 75K (Slightly more Eels)
Dragons V Tiger's 71K (About even)
Dogs V Souths - 70K (Dogs Easily)
Souths V Roosters - 60 odd from memory (Souths Easily)
Dogs V Penrith - 46K (Hardly any Penrith fans)

1. Parramatta
2. Dogs (When we have success our supporters travel the most)
3. Tiger's
4. Dragons
5. South Sydney

That was a regular season souths home game.

The prelim was 52k

The prelim in 2018 at SFS had more roosters fans.

When you look at the fan generated revenue amount for dogs its way below other clubs. Either they dont have that many fans, they are largely latent at the moment, or they dont spend money supporting the club. I was surprised as I always thought they had one of the biggest fanbases in Sydney.

2022 (Fan combined = gate takings and membership sales)
club fc revenue fan.jpg

Sydney clubs by fan generated revenue (limited data based on who produces annual reports)
1. Souths $9.8mill
2. Eels $8.6mill
3. Panthers $7.3mill
4. Roosters $5.5mill
5. Tigers $4.7mill
6. Bulldogs $3.5mill

Having a strong Bulldogs team does give the comp a different feeling given how popular they seem to be when they're going well. In the early 2000's it was the game I loved going to and their fans had/have a very distinct cultural flavour which helps them stand out.

As a fan from the Wollongong side of the merger, I am conflicted. Naturally I want more games, but then you need to have a look at the overall bigger picture of the club and see what's best. So I'll be fair minded.

My personal opinion is if there is no upgrade at Kogarah oval, then you would take all of the 5/6 Sydney games to Allianz. The club would benefit from corporates and playing against teams like Roosters, Souths, Bulldogs, Parramatta, Sharks or Tigers where the club could draw more than Kogarah's capacity. Don't get me wrong. I also want those teams to play in Wollongong. Just alternate. An example, Bulldogs away in Wollongong in 2023, 2025, 2027, 2029 etc.

Overall home games at Allianz would improve the clubs bottom line, and therefore they would pour more money into developing young players, especially in the Illawarra region.

I don't mind six games in Wollongong on the proviso that NO home games are scheduled on Thursday night or Friday 6pm.

In fact, have majority of the games during the day. As you
saw yesterday, broadcasters can take advantage of shooting wonderful overhead drone shots of the stadium, south beach, lighthouse, the city and escarpment.
3 is plenty at Allianz and none at kogarah

Used to like going to the Showgrounds When they played there

I'd largely agree with that from what I see at our games.

I don't see a lot of older teens at our games, but plenty of parents in their 30s and 40s with their kids. There are a ton of kids at our games. My 3 kids are obsessed with Latrell Mitchell and Cameron Murray.

Which makes sense. All Gen Z know are a largely successful team. My then 9-year-old son last year asked me why Souths were going so badly - we were coming 8th at the time. Sweet, summer child.

Before that we had 20 odd years of stink. I can tell you it was not much fun growing up as Souths supporter in the 90s. Plenty of non-hardcore families would have dropped off.
Winning and success has a big impact on younger generations. I hear a lot from my teacher friends in Brisbane that the Storm are almost as popular as the Broncos at a lot of schools amongst the kids who follow league.

in saying that you would think the Roosters would be gaining a lot of younger fans.

Yeh but then most of those kids (the weak-willed) quickly realise that everybody in the playground hates them so they go down the cliche‘d path of supporting the local sporting franchise.

Covid hasn't helped with crowds in this period.

2020 & 2021 the club would have lost out while being a Top 6 team.

In 2020 due to covid restrictions preventing sell out crowds in 2020.

Then in 2021 during covid lockdown we still had at least 2 home games we lost against Souths & Penrith due to being in QLD both big marquee Home games.

Would have got more then 20k against souths & 25k against Penrith both were Friday nights.

I actually do think Parra have the biggest Sydney fanbase. I just struggle to believe they would draw NFL like crowds week in week out requiring them to take games to Homebush if only they were "successful" like the roosters when really they have been successful the last 6 years and better than the roosters the last 3.

Say Parra won the comp last year... is there any reason to believe their crowds would have been bigger this year than they have been?

Because there's a great deal of variable in home crowd avg's.
KO times, weather conditions, number of games against local clubs who bring a lot of away fans, free tickets, etc. Revenue gives you a reasonable sense of how many fans are investing in their club, and isnt fudged in anyway, which is reflective of overall fanbase.

Winning and making the effort to give your star players a big profile. Kids love to follow heroes and the trendy thing of the moment. We dont do enough marketing our stars imo.

What are you on about

a crowd average over a season averages out all the variables

Dogs went close to a 20k avg at their peak

Any stats on what the uplift actually is of winning a comp? Maybe 10-20% in the winning season? Seems to me if form drops off in the following year of winning a comp the fans soon do as well. Probably need sustained 3-4 years of good form and premierships to see any sustained fan growth. Be interesting to see how many Panthers can hold on to when the inevitable happens.

nope lol. It's 12 games. Each season those 12 games could have very different variables. Depending on when games are played, who they are played against, the weather conditions on those 12 game days, how many freebies are given out etc all play a part in the overall avg for the year.

But yeh when the dogs are winning the fans come out of the woodwork for sure. At the moment though that fanbase are spending less on the dogs than even the Tigers fans do on their club!

It was actually 23k average

and many years 19 to 22k (2003 to 2015)

it’s obvious when it comes to Sydney clubs you have zero clue

So with magic round this weekend, Can it be assumed that they're going to take the day totals due to no one match tickets being available? Or count the attendance for each match?
