Agree.

I hope they miss out on the 8 for that very reason.
7th or 8th don't play home finals , so we don't want them in 5th or 6th who do play at home in week 1..
if they finished 3rd or 4th ( unlikely) , they play away in week one finals & as far as Im aware
the NRL mandate Accor , Allianz or Commbank in week 2 for Sydney teams hosting finals

that would seem correct based on last year when the Sharks finished 2nd and played
Week 1: Shark park
Week 2: SFS

In 1990, 8 years relocation, the Swans averaged 9,275.
In 1995 it was 15,976
In 2000 it was 25,563
In 2005 it was 28,733 at SCG and 32,346 overall (3 homebush games)
In 2010 it was 28,975 at SCG and 30,675 overall (3 homebush games)
In 2015 it was 32,254 at SCG and 31,521 overall (3 homebush games)

I think we want to be careful bagging the Giants. Clearly the plan is to start filling the smaller Homebush venue and take marquee games to the bigger Homebush venue until that becomes the main venue. They are only 13 years old, they take 3 games to Canberra, and the AFL really only have to focus on them in Sydney now that the Swans are pulling strong average crowds.
The Giants won't get a Superleague war to give them a leg up like the Lions and Swans got though.

Vlandys should bite the bullet and announce that Endeavour Field is not suitable to host an NRL finals match. Play it at Kogarah or SFS.
I don't think any suburban Sydney ground is suitable for an NRL final tbh
Commbank for week 1 & 2

Allianz & Accor for any final bar the GF

I agree generally with your point that the AFL is looking more at the long term than the short term. I don’t think the comparison between the swans and GWS is a good one.

The swans were a new team in a new market and it takes time to build interest. AFL has now been around in Sydney and being pushed hard for decades, it’s not some new thing taking time to build success. More importantly than that the swans were a 1 team town. Basically if you were in NSW and you have even a passing interest in the AFL you followed the swans. GWS don’t have that luxury.

Also as mentioned by others I believe GWS have been more successful from the outset. They’ve successful from the get go and haven’t really made any headway.

I’ve got no doubt that the AFL will keep pouring money in GWS and Sydney but right now there is no indication they’re making much headway into the market. Ratings and crowds simply aren’t growing.

Numbers reported for three of the NRLW games last weekend:

10,634 turned up early at the Sharks/Raiders game to watch the women`s game.
8,109 at the Knights v. Dragons game at McDonald`s Jones stadium.
7.926 attended the Cowboys v. Titans game at the Gold Coast.

Pretty impressive I thought.

10,634 was the NRL attendance for the game at Cronulla , the NRLW crowd was about half that looking at the coverage

Fair enough, looks like a bit of license taken by the reporter on that one but even around the 5000 mark is pretty impressive and would have ensured the girls had a bit of atmosphere for their game.
Ironic I suppose, in this case the small suburban ground probably was an advantage.
On the numbers overall, for a comp so early in its` evolution they are pretty solid.

1990 is a deceptive pick for the types of crowds the Swans were drawing when they first moved to Sydney as it was the lowest average crowd for the club in their entire history.

In 1982, when the club first moved to Sydney, it averaged 15,993. The Swans drew 25,847 in in 1986 and 21,987 in 1987 respectively before the decline into the early 90s. In fact during the window between 1982 - 1989, the club averaged 15,389.

You'll never win this argument. You try to force fans of Panthers, Manly, etc, to travel across town for a home final in week 1 lots won't do it. Panthers played Manly, Warriors and Sharks in finals at the old SFS and every time they drew less than they would have at Penrith. Panthers would draw more at home in week 1 than at Parramatta anyway unless the opponent is the Eels.

week 1 finals last year should have been

Fri Accor Penrith V Parra ... 30K ( heaps of parra fans )
Sat AAMI Melb V Canb 20K as it was
Sat Allianz Sharks V Cowboys 20K
Sun Allianz Souths V Roosters 40K as it was

even better with some rescheduling could have seen the penrith game at Accor on either Sat or Sun to make it easier for Panthers fans to get there rather then Friday ,
crowd would have been 40K , heavily assisted by Parra as long as the Sharks game remained on the weekend as well to assist their fans getting to Moore park

Raiders V Newcastle PAX 13261.

Saturday weather looks incredible for July - sunny and 17c. They really should be aiming for 15k+ but they are on par with sales for the Titans game which was like 11.6k.
