Good point. I think it was last year and maybe in 2019 where Fox would have the majority of NSW Cup games throughout the season, then Nine takes over during the finals and the final is not actually covered by them. The way Ch 9 advertised it, you would think it was Nine or Gem, instead it was on 9Now but actually streamed through the NSW Cup TV.
Also I saw in the paper it was also on Kayo but didnt have it.
Its disappointing the quality of that competition and its basically thrown away.
As for the QLD Cup I was surprised at the time it was on, 5pm on Sunday night. I guess there couldve been a bigger crowd it was earlier, who knows.
Really poor form.
Both the QRL and NSWRL elected to take a lot of coverage in-house as part of the more recent broadcast deal, which I feel was a huge mistake. The arrangement where both the NSW & Qld Cup both got a least one game on Channel 9 each Saturday and then Fox often picked up one other match at least breathed some life into the competition and meant come Finals, the competitions were able to pick up the free Sunday time slots.
For someone like 9, they don't just want the Grand Final for those competitions, as it is harder to sell sponsorships for and/or build up interest for one-offs.
Missed opportunity for both leagues, the PMXIII game on Saturday drew 248,000 on 9 and the NRLW Titans v Roosters game drew 295,000 across Sydney & Brisbane. I imagine Souths v Norths & Burleigh v Easts would have drawn as much or more in either timeslot.
