7 million people managed to walk to their tv and use the remote and push in the number seven

4 million more than origin
it's sad that a whole nation go's all Zombie and makes female Soccer the most watched event (?) over the trad sports of mens AFL and NRL.
It's like saying Jake Paul is the top P4P Boxer in the world.
The worlds barking.

Just a note on the Matildas and bandwagoners, I guess the key differences are the engagement for the soccer has been high. I know because my 2 kids 8&10 have been talking about soccer for months & Sam Kerr. Private schools in Sydney went yellow and green. So it doesn’t surprise me.

I feel like fifa or whoever spent a bucket load on getting those early engagements & also live sites are a huge thing. Have you ever seen Tumbalong park booked for origin or another stadium? Maybe the nrl needs to look at it for origin. You can tell people are watching as it’s dead on origin night. You could drive the from Nth to south in an hour.

if you go to Barangaroo, the westpac building or another had like some massive decorations for the soccer. So companies were into it also. We just don’t really have that happening for league right now but I am sure it can happen.

Origin is huge as it’s NSW vs QLD and it can like the Matildas invoke tribalism. Between the 2 states and territory (act) - we have a total population of 14m out of 26m included there. That’s 55% of the total population based on abs data. It doesn’t matter if you watch afl or darts or soccer you may be engagable.

I think more than anything - the soccer world cup is showing us how important it is to engage women. We have a product that can do that plus we have touch football.

But 7 Million is a huge number and no doubt it's brought millions of females who most of all don't watch say .
It should sent alarm bells to HQ of AFL and NRL and if the mens game ever gets a world cup then watch out.

Will make as much long term difference as the union World Cup or Olympics does for athletics in this country. They are sugar hits where people who don’t normally watch sport get interested as a sense of nationalism and because people are sheep and will follow the herd. Once it’s over they go back to their non sporting lives.

what it should do is make the nrl wake to the potential of the kangaroos and jillaroos brands.

Sure but afl are getting over a million for their game when we’re at 800k

we haven’t topped a million for ages

soccer was on sat and Sun doesn’t clash with many rl games
Still holding to the claim that Origin disruption causes ratings to fall?

Not long back, you were proudly boasting of losing interest between Origin and finals. Manifestly, you're not alone.

Perhaps as the season wears on, the reasons to get angry and bitter accumulate. More players belittled. More teams written off. More games dismissed as irrelevant. More officials depicted as bent. The weight of negativity eventually prevails. Cynicism is a turn-off for casual viewers. Also makes mid-season/pre-finals NRL vulnerable to alternative attractions which, however fleeting, project refreshingly positive vibes.

Starting to think RL is like Afghanistan. Periods of progress and optimism, but the Taliban always resume control. Only permanent solution is to obliterate the population/fanbase and start again. New blood, no baggage.

I agree with sentiment above. The sugar hit is already 1/4 gone. Check out the ratings for the bronze game, still high but 3.5m vs 5m. That’s a huge drop. It’s pretty big here due to the fact we are hosting it. The nrl teams individually are hugely popular. Dragons (my team), dogs and tigers have huge followings and they’re 15-17. The optimism is still there as when to look at crowds and ratings we still have it. We should all be more optimistic, as we have a good product with lots of possible expansion options.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ draws 18.6m

Sets new TV viewing records

Biggest Australian streaming event ever

England v Spain Final: 5.54 million viewers

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ has captured the hearts and minds of the nation, with the Seven Network’s live and free coverage delivering the biggest viewing audiences across all screens since the OzTAM audience measurement system started in 2001.

Almost 18.6 million Australians watched the tournament across the screens of Seven, including 14.76 million reached on broadcast and 3.82 million on 7plus.

Last night’s thrilling Final reached 5.54 million Australians, as Spain triumphed over England to become the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ champions.

The Final drew an average national total audience of 3.08 million on Seven and 7plus, including 2.7 million viewers on Seven (2 million in the capital cities) and another 373,000 viewers on 7plus.

The Final was the #1 broadcast program last night nationally and in the capital cities in all people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s. 7plus dominated BVOD viewing yesterday, with a 59.2% share. In live streaming, it had an 66.3% share.

The game peaked at 3.21 million viewers on broadcast and dominated its broadcast timeslot, scoring a 66.1% commercial audience share in total people, 70.5% in 25 to 54s and 78.4% in 16 to 39s.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ delivered some of the biggest total TV audience numbers seen in Australia in years.

The Matildas’ Semi Final against England on 16 August became the most-watched TV program in more than two decades, with an average audience of 7.2 million and a reach of 11.15 million. It was also the most streamed event ever in Australia, with 957,000 viewers on 7plus. (The OzTAM data does not include the huge out of home viewing of the tournament in pubs, clubs, stadia and so on.)

I don't think the WWC ratings should be a huge surprise really. Soccer is a massive participation sport in this country and when you get a huge event like this in our country it was always going to be big, and then the success of the Matildas lifted it into stratospheric areas.

Well done to them. It will only shift the dial here if they can translate the A League and W League into genuine domestic comps. I doubt they can, but it remains to be seen.

The NRL and AFL will continue on because they have the best players in their codes playing here.

It's interesting to note that the media is including the Post and Pregame figures for the WWC on Seven, whereas when they report Origin or GFs they report them separately.

So if I collate SOO Game II Pregame, Game and Postgame the figures comes to 5,845,000. That's just Origin II 2023 btw..

So why have afl ratings bounced back whilst the nrl hasn’t

origin fatigue would explain it

Wait is that true ?

surely when they post their ratings it’s the average over the whole game
