the folks with 4 sticks probably feel the same. This is the same AFL that did away with its own origin, and then did the same with their womens state matches when the national comp fired up.

Origin is something the AFL and its fans admire and look back wistfully at once a year, but none of them really want to emulate it any more.
Correct, the afl fans will admire the state of origin when it's played @ the MCG next year, the Rugby League version💙

State of origin is a great sporting event but only works when your sport is confined to two states. When youre a national sport it no longer works.

Easy to fix - you put in a team called “The Alliance” which has every one else combined - the crowds will flock.

Victoria, ACT...

I mean not a state of Australia but Auckland is a pretty important market for us as well. The game is far from "confined to two states". Even if we pretend it is, those states make up 55% of Australia's population.

Yes they will, while at the same time the vast majority dont want it back.
I've always thought to create a rep scene, the AFL should run a "World Cup" style tournament every four years (or two, whatever works) with a team from each of the states / territories of Australia (Vic, SA, WA, QLD, NSW, ACT, TAS & NT) and invite two international teams (maybe the finalists of the International Cup held a year prior for example) to make up 10.

It'd give them some reasonably meaningful rep footy and helps the international game grow because it feeds into something bigger.

Anyway, I can't stand the flogs so glad they don't do it.
