Havent had NZ ratings since 2015. Sporadic reports of increases and decreases since and the occasional hard number for Warriors games. Could not make an honest guess at this point as to what they are now.

for the record the average rating in NZ in 2015 was 27k (down 58% from 2014). Warriors games averaged about 100, topping out at 156k per game.

Also for reference, US Ratings were last available in 2016, the average of reported ratings (29 matches) was 11,000. There were a lot more that didnt get reported beneath that so your looking at a sub 10k average per game. (AFL was similar)

Well someone`s measuring them.
Here`s a union article from 2022 expressing concern that the Warriors might be outrating the union on NZ Sky.

"Having long had the Sunday afternoon time slot locked in as the home for the majority of their games, the Warriors are starting this year with five straight Friday and Saturday evening games. That puts them in direct competition with Super Rugby, so it is clear that NRL very much foretold the blood in the water over the 15-a-side code's troubles getting Super Rugby Pacific up and running.

"It would be very interesting to see what the viewing figures are from Sky over the clash, because if this objectively bad Warriors team are winning it, that should be sending alarm bells ringing at NZ Rugby."

The article was referring to " the code`s (union) trouble getting super rugby Pacific up and running" in 2022. I hate to tell them but from what I`ve heard this year with dwindling crowds in NZ and Australian teams making up four of the bottom five sides things haven`t improved in 2023.

Just bringing in one team like the Dolphins hasn't created an extra game, but what you'll start to see is more Brisbane teams exclusive content on Fox. An example of that is yesterday with the two Brisbane teams only on Fox.

It may encourage more Kayo subscriptions from Brisbane based fans.

As for the more minutes thing. The cricket example is poor. They got $200m for less then 20 days of content... not sure anyone can argue it is a bad deal for them?

If you work 30 hours a week and do the same job as someone who works 40. Do you expect the same pay? Actually in this case it is 60% less content.

I hate AFL as much as the next person but they have half of the country, provide more advertising revenue so of course will get more

To use your analogy, yes If I work 30 hours as a doctor I would expect to earn more than a street sweeper who had worked 40 hours.

With the NRL having higher ratings than the AFL I'm sure Fox and Nine charge more for advertising time in the NRL than they do in the AFL. Same reason why cricket doesn't pull in more money than the NFL. Much more time for advertising between every over but much lower ratings so charge per ad is much less.

I never said it did and that obviously wasn`t the point of me posting it.
It was more to do with the fact that that particular union scribe after bagging the Warriors mercilessly half-way through the article revealed that he`s genuinely concerned that the Warriors might be outrating the union.

Except the country is about split down the middle

WA/SA/Vic AFL.
QLD and NSW NRL

They get just over 4 Billion cash across 7 years, This counts an undisclosed amount from Telstra including upgrades to Marvel.

So 1st thing is need to see what TV is paying to do the sums - something no one has the figures

here goes anyway

But what we do have is at the start of the year each network/sport has a season launch.

The press release from that contains the relevant sponsors. AFL's coverage is 9 in front

They also in SA and WA show the local teams live and as such can charge a premium knowing they will have a huge slab of the population.

Lets just say you are right and Fox League can charge more than the AFL version.

We are talking 5 or so ad breaks in the pre and post game. 10 min half time

As opposed to the same in the pre and post game.

10 min 1/4 time
10 min 1/2 time
10 min 3/4 time

So there are still way more ads even if they are worth 80% of the NRL version. Especially with 9 game to 8

Now FTA not only has that but there are more goals scored in AFL then tries scored in League. So again more advertisement even at a lower rate = more revenue
