My god, are we still talking about this? Are you still claiming that NRL got a good deal - or that they negotiated this well - or that somehow the fumblers aren’t getting more money and considerably more too.

Occam’s razor tells you this but for some reason you are still trying to argue that you can’t simply state this fact. The fumblers did their negotiations better and they got more money. Case closed. Let’s hope we do it better than them next time.

No I am claiming both got market value.

AFL has more sponsors associated with their coverage and longer coverage hence

Remembering both deals go up 3% of so a year.

So the $400m deal this year for NRL becomes $412m for 2024

$424m for 2025

$436m for 2026

$449m for 2027

$462m for 2028

$475m for 2029

$489m for 2030

$503m in 2031.

While a new deal will kick in with a 9th game, Even on the current trend the NRL deal will reach $503 before the AFL deal expires. Which that too will start lower and increase year on year

IF as the AFR is correct and the NRL is cash only then you can add 20m to these figures.

Again people need to stop looking at these things as straight lines.

Or that the 2 are even the same. More sponsors too for 1 code then the other

If you are going to argue market value is what happened then you have to conclude that the market value for the fumblers will increase by around 30-40% in the next 24 months whereas ours has increased by what 5% (if that)

That seems like a strange market deviation without any real change in the parameters of each competition. Fumble games haven’t increased in duration. They haven’t increased the amount of teams. They have a full women’s competition but you can’t seriously argue that it is worth over a $100 million are you? So why are you getting so much increase in the deviation between these two deals other than simply to conclude that one negotiated better than the other.

Also, I and others who have argued that it was a dud deal in comparison are not arguing that we should get the same or arguing in straight lines. The fumblers should, considering the length of the game get a little more (the increase bring more from FTA) however the last negotiations have definitely broken a trend.

This ,
ours went from 380 mill ( 2017 ) to something north of 400...
might be as much as 450 , might be as little as 402 ( 2028)
an increase of between 6% & 18%.... & we have increased content considerably with a new team

theirs went from 416 mill ( 2016 ) to 643 mill ( 2031)
an increase of 55% & they haven't added much or changed much at all.

based on a like for like increase ( it wasn't as we gave broadcasters more content )
Our rights are worth 570 mill a year in this present deal.

We got dudded
nothing surer...

Good figures.. The NRL can start negotiations for the 2028 new deal late next year ie end 2024 or start of 2025, so it's not far away of course, also the AFL starts their two year deal which if take out Teltsra $50m gives them a $423 media (only) deal, so again by your figures for the year 2024 the nrl has $424m (NRL) to AFL $423m, a one million dollar win for the NRL But Mr dRedwill carry on, you can bet on it.

It pie in the sky. The NRL has a $2bill 5 year deal cash and contra starting this year
$402 mill a year avg
$130mill ch9 (inc radio rights) (fact)
$32mill SkyNZ (fact)
$240mill Fox (guess based on overall announced amount and vlandys copping a hammering over a sht deal and him justifying it by 'saving them')
Approx $30mill contra. ($24mill last deal plus $5mil more contra from Ch9 though may be more depending on how much of the $12mill skynz uplift is contra)

I'll be proved right when this years annual report comes out next March and you can see the level of cash increase in the licensing line.

It wont likely start to go to negotiations for 2028+ until 2026 going by historic trends of deal negotiation periods. By then we need to have a plan for 20 clubs, ten games a weekend to sell and 2 to 3 bidders going hard for them. Then we will see a major uplift like AFL has seen.
Worse case scenario is NRL rush in team 18 for 2025 so they can renegotiate with Fox who then demand an extension beyond 2028.

3 new clubs and an extra 2 games to run will cost around $65million for NRL. Then the other 17 clubs will be clamoring for more. The next TV deal needs to go up by at least $100mill cash to make it work.

With PVL at the helm, we could out rate the AFL by double and he would still struggle to get a good broadcasting deal.

Until he is removed from his job, i dont see us getting fair value.
He certainly shouldnt be allowed anywhere near the next tv negotiations after his last performance. Chairs and CEOs have been sacked for a lot less than what he did!

Hmm lets just review shall we?
signed a sht deal for no extra money with Ch9 giving them money to bid for AFL and pay Union
signed a sht deal with Fox for little extra that gave them money to bid big for AFL
signed an extended deal that delivered $150mill+ less in Australian Tv rights a year than our competitor
signed a long extension at time of uncertainty when his CEO and COO recommended not to (allegedly)
when questioned why he had signed a sht deal came out with:

AW: Was it a mistake doing the deal with Foxtel during the pandemic?
At the time, Fox needed an asset on its sheet to continue its viability. If we didn’t come into play, there’d be no Foxtel.

AW: Isn’t that Rupert Murdoch’s problem, not rugby league’s?
If Foxtel coughs, all the codes catch a cold. If you haven’t got them in play, the other parties won’t be paying as much as they should because you need competitive tension. When COVID-19 hit, they were the only ones. If they went under, there was no-one else available.

Sounds like the bloke we need to lead the next tv negotiations lol
