So basically the NRL - with 2 fewer teams based in Australia - has managed to generate as much interest in 16-54 year olds as the AFL. It's essentially the Baby Boomers making up the difference in the codes.

Those baby boomers were the ones that experienced Super League etc. Gen Y, Z & A have next to no memory/understanding of those events. Pretty much now it's just young people deciding what appeals to them.

But ask yourself this - the oldest boomers are now 77. Not to be morbid but as each year goes on, that baby boomer advantage that the AFL currently has will start to disappear...

NRL was 4.6m on Nine including BVOD
AFL FTA was 5.736m - 4.98m on Seven + 756,000 reach on 7plus

If anything im a fan of the data. And my support has little to nothing to do with how the ratings or attendances or any other data i present is done. Way too many people to call it out on twitter or forums for personal biases to creep in without being noticed - and all the data is publicly available anyway.

I follow Carlton in the AFL, but if they arent playing im generally not watching. I loosely follow the Broncos, but its a very loose following. I havent made any great secret of my preferences, they are fairly widely known.
