Warriors have purchased a pub across the road from Eden Park that they plan on turning in to a Warriors themed bar. I wouldn’t be surprised if they take a big game or 2 there once it’s up and running, maybe Anzac Day or first home game. Be great if they could find a way to get another 5-10k in to Mt Smart as well though.

Is this a recent development and do you have any press releases etc that we might read about this.

Didn’t the all blacks game against South Africa last July get a crowd of 30k with temporary seating?

Yeh, the Warriors had it for 2 games in that period (WWC). It wasn’t all that popular by all accounts because it meant there was no fan zone or whatever it’s called at the Northern end.

Lot of space there though. I’m guessing the hills at the Northern end have been ruled out, they are pretty steep so probably OHS issue.

I guess the club values the views of its fans more than adding an extra 5-6k to the overall capacity.

don’t they use that area as a stage for concerts and festivals etc?

Yeh seems that way, still if they could find a way to do both it’d be perfect. Ideal scenario would probably be a permanent south stand and move the some of the temp stands to the north and/or get the hill certified again. Could have the stands behind the fanzone to keep it open, wouldn’t be the best view from those stands or the hill but could sell them as cheap GA tickets.

Northern end is where they set up stages by the looks so anything permanent there seems unlikely.

Yeah they definitely need to build a permanent south stand not only for increasing the capacity but those uncovered seats and temporary seats look ugly as hell.

I’d build some open terracing on the northern hill area. With the hill already being there you’ve already got half the foundations there to build on and a ready made ground level councourse at the back that’s adjacent to the northern ticket gates, so it wouldn’t cost that much to do. Keep it elevated enough so patrons can see over the fanzone area or any temporary seating that’s added there for big games.
At the south end it’d be good to have a lower tier that wraps around the corners with a second tier and roof in the middle. A concourse could connect the top of the lower tier to ground level on the western side.

The stage for concerts is built where the current fanzone area is, another good reason not to put permanent seating there. The hill is behind that, so there’s no reason you can’t put an elevated seating level there, it wouldn’t obstruct any of the current usages.

That mainly unused hill could do with a temporary stand

Thanks Harry, its a great thing to see our fantastic NRL game rise in New Zealand and with the Mexicans in AFL heartland down in Melbourne.

The kiwis are loving the speed and skills that Rugby League has and as Rugby Union moves away from its base game with new rule changes, more and more kiwis are buying into the brilliance of our game. The TV coverage over there is also very good so the NRL should do everything in its power to keep the Warriors as successful as possible.

The Storm are also finally getting the recognition with Mexican crowds. A lot of people in Melbourne have gone off fumble ball with their incessant rule changes to stop tackling as well and it has kind of become basketball but with a lot of fumbling and soft play.

The Storm membership is almost as big as the AFL teams and I can see a day where Rugby League rivals AFL south of the border.

It is not too far off before we will need two teams in New Zealand and in Mexico there is a game played every week.

There can be no dispute that our great game of Rugby League is growing and is becoming the No 1 sport in the region.

Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Melbourne

I know that V Landys is over in Las Vegas trying to woow the USA gambling dollar but more money should be spent at grass roots level in the new provinces trying to get juniors to play the game.

The Crowd numbers in Melbourne and New Zealand are outstanding.

The game is growing at expediential rates.

The rule tweeks that have made it faster and cleaner have broufgt Rugby League up to be the utopian version of a football code in the world.

A great blance of strength, skill and speed that can be played by all body shapes and a game that challenges the mid, soul and physique to the maximum.

New Zeeland growth of Rugby League is through the roof and withing a few years, it will challenge Rugby Union for the number 1 sport in kiwiland.

If you listen to NZ radio, they are tired of Rugby Union played under the draconian Northern Hemisphere ideas where the ball is barely in play and it is just scrum, line out, kick, scrum line out kick.

Rugby League, the running game, is winning the battle of code domination.

It is great to be part of this decade and watch our great game prosper.
