Mate Ma'a Tonga was the name given to the national team by the TNRL and what the team used up until mid-2018.

After the issues with the TNRL governance, the IRL took over the running of the Tongan national team and they were called Tonga Invitational or Kuo To'a

A new local governing body, Tonga Rugby League, has now become the official governing body of the code in Tonga and the IRL handed over the running of the team last year. This new body tried using the MAA name and the below logo for last year's England Tour, but there has been IP disputes over the name, as well there was some confusion over whether this was a new body or return of the old, etc.

As such, the decision was made this year to completely rebrand the TRL with a new logo and use this on the national squads.

I've got that one in my wardrobe too. Personally, I like the new logo (and by the sounds of it, the new board too ... f**k the old one and their union-boosting ways). Just a shame they can't have -at least for now- the Mate Ma'a name.

I believe it translates to 'Die for Tonga'?

Sounds like something in the union DNA. They can't stand that we broke away from them, and on top of that, have become increasingly successful. The French Govt back in the day, this Tongan mob, and everyone in between from private schools to journalists.

Regardless, that jersey looked awesome last night. Well done to those in power to go with it.

ROOS AXING PAYS OFF
A decision to cut the price of the Australian men and women jerseys to just $99 – down from $169 – has paid instant dividends.
Kangaroos jersey sales have already risen by 61 per cent.
The NRL worked closely with Classic Sportswear to ensure the jersey was affordable for fans ahead of the Pacific Championships.
“Making team jerseys accessible and affordable for fans is a key Commission objective,” said NRL boss Andrew Abdo.
“We have had record sales of Kangaroo and Jillaroo jerseys at $99 and we know the players want to see a wave of green and gold at the stadiums.
“Fans wearing their team jerseys adds to the game day atmosphere and experience which is great for international football.”
A record crowd of 33,196 people watched the Kangaroos beat Tonga 18-0 at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Damn right, too bad they have no jurisdiction over the clubs themselves regarding how much they can sell their own merch brand, BUT they should get the retro gear down to that price, that they should have some weight to throw around, imagine a local nrl stadium choc full of the old retro gear, instead of the 1st grade bland white/navy shit clubs put out these days..
AAAAAND the NRL should have a live merch shop out front if every game day selling both the teams retro gear, to rival and compete the home teams merch store,
All moneys go back to the NRL clubs or grassroots anyways, so it not like they are undercutting them, just giving folks more option to spend thier hard earned

Yep missed opportunity in all sports that they don’t even have a token selection of away merch at games of any sport. Majority of games I go to I’m an away supporter would like to be able to pick up some merch. Only time I remember seeing it is for origin

Finals too... but I feel like it's a "this is our home game, so sell your merch elsewhere" kinda thing which doesn't end up helping anyone, when you can get the best of both worlds

Away teams seem to have a stall at Titans games. I only got to attend a few this year. But I think maybe the Titans run one with away gear. I also remember seeing the Broncos bring a merchandise van.

I agree, there always should be a decent range of away team merch at games.

Last time St George went to Canberra as well as to Belmore as well as Allianz as the away team on ANZAC Day, they brought along the merch trailer. And I've spotted away sides bringing along their merch trailers to Accor games numerous times

Aren’t they the annoying arseholes that put the disgusting ugly three stripes on every-f**king-thing? Ffs
They weren't inferring ASICS do the entire league. They where referencing the second part, and saying the price of kangaroos jerseys should flow on to NRL jerseys. In saying that, I believe you are thinking of Adidas. They definitely have a trademark 3 line thing.
