If you had to lose a couple of players in a terrible decision making process, these would be close to the two you would sadly let go.

Which reminds me that there has always been a few historic pre-season catastrophes for SGI involving players. Part of the DNA and folklore.

Firstly, there was young Gasnier who was done in that Charity Shield and was wiped out for months when the season started.

Secondly, I think I can recall that 7s or 9s tournament. I think it was interstate, and you lost 3 or 4 key players for weeks. I think you won it though lol. Mary was coaching I think.

And then there was that young guy on the cusp, very young and strong, club favourite son type. He got smashed in a trial and his career ended. I wish I could recall his name.

Hopefully that’s the end of the dreaded SGI pre season curse for one more year.

Best of luck to both players. Terrible news.

The injury toll, tests my loyalty to the game sometimes. Does my head in.
And Geoff Selby a very promising second rower killed in a Car accident in off season

We won nothing under Mary. It was 9's in Perth 2020. We won the QF controversially and got smashed in semi or GF?
One of Cody Ramsay's shining lights on the stage as he debuted for us in that tournament
Mary put that finals berth and win straight down on his resume

Looking at the sharks that year, they had the lowest for and against of any top 4 side and won about 15 games by two tries or less.

So it was a pug ugly grinding season with plenty of solid D and closing out.

If you don’t have a side of marquee, especially in attack, that’s a reasonable game model to pursue this year.

So Hunt is expected to kick long and kick often.

If I was prepping a side for Big D, I’d have the boys training for 120 minute games for extended muscle memory and cycling 100kms every second day.

I came close I guess! Still L plating, all good.

Mary’s resume, goes back to his days as a young Cub Scout.

During the annual Bush Camp he got his platoon of fellow 11 year olds lost for 3 days and almost started a catastrophic bushfire in a national wilderness park.

OK people, Its been a horror week, but we are the Dragons what else would it be, we should be used to it by now. So its time to look at what we have for 2024, 2025 can look after itself we will have enough cap to buy the NSW SOO team :) Now my theory this year it has to be sink or swim for some of our juniors, Coric , Tuitavake and Fafita have to step up, no choice they just have to. I would slot Sloan at 5/8 Kyle back to 14, that gives us cover by kyle in the halves and Muhlesen cover for 14, anyone in the halves as long as its not Bird. Take Lomax to FB Matt Feigai to center and Finau on the wing, Tamale and the other Feigai can cover off there. I think both Couchman's can handle 2nd Row, JDB back to Lock and Sele and both Molo's at prop. Take your choice for bench players as long as Kyle is 14.
This just shows us what a shitfight our pathways have been over the years, we should never have been in a position of absolutely no backup via our pathways, look at the panthers and who they have lost and are about to lose, meanwhile its promote from within, not like the Dragons seeking some messiah on big bucks, lets hope this is a lesson for all at the club, especially you MR Harran !!!

Our squad has 27 including Allen.
Many are unproven in 1st grade.
Slim pickings.
Players who were released from other clubs include Hymel Hunt, George Jennings.Eddie Blacker, Brenko Lee.
Morgan Boyle.
Ben Hampton.,Brendan Eliiott.and a few other Cowboys to name a few.
Morgan Boyle might be a good pick up on a 1 year deal - currently without a contract so there's the incentive of earning an extension.

Great post.

I was inspired and have spent the best part of tonight learning more about these candidates.

I was hoping to find one that offered the edge.

My research ended up somewhat controversially with Brenko in the lead despite his legendary injury problems, his penchant for not finishing contracts, his lack of discipline, his dreaming and ability to get coaches off side. In other words, a potential WT club captain.

He’s a big unit that seems to get excited and then tapers off.

But I thought if he could mind meld with flanno, he’d be a handy utility and good for half a game of brute force.

And after scratching my head, the super league called!!

Closer to home, There’s big young Tuki Simpkins who played for us who had a sweet offload but can’t tackle properly. Train and trial at the dolphins.

Ex Union and they often struggle with league.

George was my second choice. A triumphant return for Eddie?

They all offer and lack certain things!

Recruitment is a bastard. It’s amazing how regular first grade players outgun fringies.

These players were released by their clubs for a reason.
The only one I’d entertain is Hunt as depth.

May be controversial but I’d grab Blake Austin from the Entrance tigers for halves cover in 2024. Kurt falls signed a train and trial for Brisbane I always thought he was a shining light in penriths NSW cup side. Also there are players like Rajab at the dogs and puru at the sharks that have real potential and are off contact in 2024 we could offer a 2 year deal and push for an early release as they are not in favour at their clubs

Coric has nowhere to step up from, missed entire last season if you recall. Did the former Manly pair even play one top grade match, I know both spent a good deal of time in the injury ward.

We all know none of the below will happen, Sloan at 5/8 , Zack at the back, Tamale in his place and Finau next to him on the wing. The incompetent Matt Fegai should be gone for good with Hunt moved to his best spot hooker. I do think Flanno will do some switching with Sloan and Lomax as he has not trained in pre season in the position for nothing.
