While Lomax's goalkicking percentage might not be great, how many of our tries are scored an inch from the sideline when Rava carries 3 blokes over? Now i know Lomax has missed easy ones, but we rarely score near the posts, or at least that is what it feels like to me. How many times have we outstriped teams and the player is able to run around and score near to posts, making the conversion easier.
Good Point! What’s more is we never look like structuring anything like scoring near the post. If we threaten more in attack in the middle (which we haven’t done in 6 years) Lomax, Sui and Rava would have more space and be more effective. As it is oppositions now know we are easy pickings and offer little in attack up the middle near the post/try line.

Spot on. Despite this Zac used to nail almost all the widies he is now missing. Since bringing in former Kiwi goalkicker, Harrigan, have noticed Zac has now been trying to swing the ball on the widies which only needs a small mistime for it to miss.

?. You are benching our best player Jack DB, one of our few that can play full mins, for Amone, who'd be better as an outside back, while Sloan's skills and vision would be wasted on the wing, be rag dolled by big centres and edge forwards and thrown into touch, imho.

Don’t know 77 , some of those games we couldn’t put to bed were because of our pedestrian outside backs In both offence & defence.
Some of those games weren’t put to bed because we have a 1mill $ “marquis” halfback who couldn’t organise a root in a brothel. Plus the team is brain dead.
We can get by with a serviceable set of backs and of course improve as we need to eg wing. And obviously edge defence needs to be fixed. That’s coaching and structure.
But without field position and momentum provided by a decent forward pack there’s no point taking the field IMO. Our forwards in 2023 (and 2022 and ‘21) were an embarrassing rabble not worthy of wearing the red V.
Then find a useful partner for CHunt and a fullback.

My thinking Is Amone has ball skills, speed and is a biggish body. Could be a Radley type given time. JDB for mine has lost speed and might be better as a prop rotation. Sloan I understand was a winger coming through so he could still be in the team but not needing to make the defensive reads and organisation that the modern fullback does. All speculation of course!

if rava carries only 3 blokes over the line i can't see why he doesn't carry them over to the posts

Better yet we find someone to take (C)Hunt off our hands.
No more sideways runs, hospital passes, Hail Mary plays and zero field goals. Plus his inability to manage a game. As for his captaincy... he couldn't lead a choko vine over a fence.

In the Herald again today saying he wants to leave & will ask for a release again at the end of next year. Really just stop talking to the press Ben it is really boring, I have changed my views he doesnt want to be there so let him go.

It's like a broken record.
They must be light on stories.

Hunt’s preference is still to finish his career in Queensland, something he made clear to Dragons officials at the end of the State of Origin series, and a point he has since reiterated on several occasions with incoming coach Shane Flanagan.

Working against Hunt is the fact there are no big-money replacements on the market that the Dragons could sign as a replacement.

The 33-year-old Hunt is hopeful of featuring in the end-of-year Tests for Australia – and open to representing the Prime Minister’s XIII side, which will be named on Tuesday – but admitted the end of the regular season could not have come quick enough.

Flanno’ is digging his heels in; he’s coming in as coach, he wants to win and he wants me there, which I understand,” Hunt said.

“I’ve never had any issues with Flanno, and we’ve had some open conversations. I think he’ll bring in a good culture; he’s straight up and down, he’s got history with being good at recruitment, and what we need is some senior players with experience who can help the young squad.

“At this stage, I’ll be heading back to the Dragons for the pre-season.”

Hunt admitted after Queensland’s win in game two of the Origin series that he wanted to return home. He had hoped the Dragons would let him leave immediately, despite having two-and-a-half years to run on his St George Illawarra deal.

Should another exit request be blocked, Hunt will push to leave this time next year, which will give the Dragons 12 months to find a replacement, with plenty of playmakers to flood the market at the end of 2024.

AT THIS STAGE.....

Agreed I can't see him seeing out his contract. If he doesn't want to represent our club, which he clearly has no idea the significance of, let him go. And I think they will, but not until some other players are brought in and they can land an adequate swap for him. He'll be here next year, the year after might be a different story.

Mate I don't think he will even start the next season , just my opinion , and I'm hoping Flanno has lined up something ......

Yes, "At this stage", sounds very uncommitted to the red v.

Imo, these conversations he's had with Flanno, have been more around "what must happen for me to get a release?" To which Flanno would say "like for like" replacement.

Now, we've signed KF, who can play 6,7,9 and 14, has 80+ games experience, but not what you'd call like for like.
We are watching the Luai situation very closely, and imo is your like for like.

Luai isn't my 'cup of tea' as an individual, however, as a 6, he's very effective, and knows how to win a premiership, and plays at SOO level.

Letting Bud go is also very strategic, as he has a 2x2 contract with the Tigers, which coincidentally, equates to the length of Hunt's contract with us (the first of the 2x2).

There's also still uncertainty around Jr, and we've blooded young CM, although I'm unsure if he's been offered a deal, in any capacity for next year and beyond. Herring, and other youngsters below him, still are a ways off. It's interesting they've tapped Paul Turner, this to me signals the intent to really develop these young Dragon stars.

So, in conclusion, Hunt will be here next year "at this stage", unless we can sign a like for like, if we can, he will depart, blink your eyes and you'll miss it.

Oh, and 1 final thought. No coincidence that once Hook was hooked, Hunts form dissipated dramatically, whilst Lomax's form lifted substantially. As I said previously, it wouldn't surprise if he was given the captaincy, or co-captaincy by Flanno.
