NRL signing news: Corey Allan joins St George Illawarra Dragons on one-year deal

Story by Tom Naghten • 20m

St George Illawarra have added versatile outside back Corey Allan to their squad on a one-year deal.
Having spent time at the Rabbitohs, Bulldogs and Roosters, Allan has amassed plenty of experience across his 63-game NRL career.
Allan has scored 13 tries and will give incoming Dragons coach Shane Flanagan another depth option in the backs.
“Corey’s experience and versatility will be a big plus for us this season,” said Flanagan.

“Having previously represented Queensland as well as playing in some quality systems, he will add plenty of value to our roster.”
Allan was part of the Maroons side which upset New South Wales to win the season-ending 2020 State of Origin series.
The 25-year-old is set to compete with the likes of Sione Finau for a spot in the Dragons' team.

If true very happy with this signing

A clear upgrade on Moga and both Fegai’s
Yep- good height and speed (for a wing/full-back spot and competition for Tyrell- please let's stop the Slowmax to full-back talk) and young enough to offer something beyond his one-year deal if he performs in 2024.

Current state of play (as I see it)

2024 - 2 (certain) spots available. Still holding Ramey and Amone (uncertain)
Flanno has stated that he will, possibly hold over 1 spot until the cut-off date.

2024 - Off Contract List (16)
Tuitavake, BMM, Allan, Ramsey*, Frank Molo, JDB, Sua, Mat Feagai, Max Feagai, Michael Molo, Suli, Turner, Tamale, Amone*, Eisenhuth, Sloan
Rumoured to re-sign - Suli (3yr deal), Sua (wants 4yr deal talks ongoing)
Players with Mutual Options - Russell, Bird

Who to keep? Replacing 16-18 players is a massive task.
IMO, players to LOOK at keeping, pending their 2024 performance and development are:
Tuitavake, JDB (1yr only), Sua, Michael Molo, Suli, Tamale, Sloan. That still would leave 9 spots to fill. But, we need to let go BMM, Frank Molo, Feagai x2 & Turner. The cases for Ramsey and Amone are up to the NRL (I doubt young Cody will be able to play 1st grade again).
Rumoured, and maybe why Flanno wants to hold 1 spot open, is to attract Renton from Super Rugby after their season finishes.

2025 - Off Contract List (7)
Hunt, Fannagan, Ryan Couchman, Toby Couchman, Finau, Fafita, Egan (from development squad for '25), Russell and Bird (if MO are taken up).
Rumoured to be chasing for 2025 - AFB, Luki, Deardon, Finefeuiaki. (IMO we MAY only get 1 of either Luki or Finefeuiaki not both, and we may not get either).

Flanno and Co have a huge job ahead, juggling, not only players, but the salary cap as well. The fact we are offering AFB such as deal, reflects the endevour to look at signing specific players that will improve our team, not just make up the numbers. We are in swinging for at least 1 of the Cowboys players, they also won't come cheap. We have players to re-sign and plenty of raw talent coming through at all levels now. Balance and co-ordinating positions, where needed, is going to take some time (yes, we've heard that before), but it seems that the dark days are slowly disappearing, and we can look forward to each season once again.

Currently only 1 spot available in top 30. Most media outlets keep forgetting about Tamale. Possibly going to be 3 open spots pending outcomes on Ramsey and Amone.

I'm thinking if they were going to sack Amone they would've already. Guessing he's in the 30 for next year but missing a chunk of games at the start. Ramsey I thought was already agreed with the NRL?

No agreement with the NRL about Ramsey. They had an agreement for salary relief for 2023 only, which took the NRL ages to fumble around and make a decision on. Club working with the NRL to try and get him removed from the top 30 and exempt from the salary cap for 2024. Who knows how long the NRL will take this time, but I'd be surprised if his spot wasn't freed up.

You are indeed correct. 29 contracted players unless Amone and/or Ramsey are removed.

So, at 29 I don't expect us to sign anyone else in the short-term.
What we see is what we have to work with for most of '24.

The recruitment focus is now well and truly on 2025.

If the Warriors accept a player swap of the Molo brothers for AFB, it would not only deliver a marquee prop for 2024 but turn our 29 players into 2

Why would the Warriors do this? Because AFB would prefer to move on and the swap would suit them..
Why would the Dragons offer up the Molo Brothers? Because they have not really risen to potential and the; Dragons have their eye on other players.

Swapping Hunt for Dearden also does not increase our top 30 numbers but gets rid of a disgruntled player and picks up a much younger exciting player.

Why would the Cowboys want this swap? Because they mitigate the uncertainty moving forward with a swap that appears to be of equal value.

Why would the Dragons want this swap? Because they get to move on to a younger player of similar quality and a desire to be at the club.

On the subject of Renton, - they breed them tough down in the frozen south of the South Island-and the Highlanders are always competitive in Super Rugby.

I am basing this solely on internet coverage of his performances for the Highlanders and the praise he attracted was for his defence which was described as "phenomenal". Most of you would be aware that the quaintly named "Laws of Rugby" have been amended to ban tackles above the sternum (was above the shoulders) on a two year trial basis but you can bet it will be permanent. Hasn't been applied to Super Rugby as yet, but only a matter of time.

Maybe Renton, and others in Rugby will become more attracted to League when they are effectively playing touch.

This time last year we were all lamenting the club’s choice of coach in Hook who was a shot duck, but we’re glad we had Sullivan, Amone, Ramsay and Sloan to look forward seeing run around in 2023.

Well 3 of those players don’t exist at our club anymore and it turns out the other can’t make a one on one tackle to save his life.

We were saying then “at least it can’t get any worse”. Well here we are, and the answer: Corey Allen and the coach’s son no one else wanted.

I think I’m done.

You crack me up thebigredv hahaha! I think I am done as well!!.

If they made a movie of this club we call the Mighty Dragons just in the space of a year with what you have said - "This time last year we were all lamenting the club’s choice of coach in Hook who was a shot duck, but we’re glad we had Sullivan, Amone, Ramsay and Sloan to look forward seeing run around in 2023." then the sacking of Hook, the whining of Hunt, the near signing of Jason Ryles, the signing of Flanagan, the near signing of AFB etc. etc. it could win an academy award for the comedy of the year!! Hahaha!

What’s your expectations for 2024?
Presuming we sign nobody of note from here, what will make you proud and stick around for another year in 2025 as a loyal supporter?
