You say these extra weeks but the ESL won't move. So just results in pre season starting later
Theres talk at the moment of reducing fixtures in SL to avoid the loop fixtures. Will be a hard sell to clubs as most of their revenue comes from gameday. Problem over there is the challenge cup extends the season. I guess the only option if they want to be in the Int calendar is them starting the season earlier. Though RL in Jan and Feb is no fun!

They currently play 27 games a season + CC. getting it down to 24 and starting a bit earlier might be possible if the Int spin off is seen as valuable enough for clubs.

So player fatigue is worse in super league than nrl

Wonder how many games soccer players in the premier league play together with the fa cup and European comps

They sometimes play two games a week

Its a lot, I think the avg is 58 games a year but could in theory be 74 if they won every cup!
38 EPL, eight FA Cup, six League Cup, 22 Europe comps

the physical toll on their bodies would be vastly different to league though.

Each club round generates around five million viewers

Taking out five rounds is 25 million viewers

Australia v Tonga got 900k viewers and Australia v nz less

Its a good idea in theory and the nrl simply can’t afford to do it
As I said in my post it may be a case of only removing 2-3 rounds. Thats something that the NRL would need to work out.

Just a few things on your stats though. Firstly total viewership isn’t everything. For example SOO only gets maybe a little over 2 rounds of the NRL but which of those do you think networks would rather have? Not saying that international games would rate like SOO either before you reply.

I think it’s a little unfair doing this calculation based on how Tonga vs Australia rated this year. Right now the international game is an afterthought that is basically treated like a joke by all levels of league from the players to the personalities to the people running the game. I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable to think these games could rate significantly higher.

IF the NRL was to go ahead with this I think there would be multiple factors as to why they would do it.

1 - To placate the RLPA.

2 - They believe it has the potential to increase the interest and viewership of the remaining NRL rounds

3 - they believe that by focusing more on the international game and really pushing it that they can significantly improve ratings. Maybe they saw the Matilda’s this year and thought they want a piece.

4 - potentially allows them to push more into places outside of NSW and QLD. This may be valuable to advertisers.

5 - they may see potential in the NRLW growing and needing more airtime away from the NRL season which may fill the gap somewhat.

NBA teams can play up to 4 game a week. You just can’t compare sports like that to RL.

I’m not saying it’s not doable

Just there will be an impact on the tv deal

Going to 22 rounds as suggested by the rlpa seems like a decent solution together with a ten team finals series and a 20 team comp

And yes they can expand the number of internationals the pacific cup is too short
