2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

Sevens FTA coverage of the 2024 AFL H&A season has seen 138 matches with a 47.423 million total for the season. The per match average audience is 344,000, with the per match reach average 1.482 million, The broadcast average is 499,000. (Broadcast is the Seven programming per VOZ)
Assuming "per match average" diverges from "broadcast average" due to the broadcast figure sometimes representing two simultaneous games, using the per match figure is more ethical in comparisons with NRL.

AFL fans would argue that a greater number of FTA games, particularly on Saturday, drag their averages down.

Ratings for afternoon AFL games are especially poor. Neither Seven nor AFL appear to derive any great benefits from these broadcasts.

This is true, but Seven cares about the national broadcast numbers for its programming which is why i provide both.

The requirement to broadcast local teams in their home states exc victoria harms that average quite a bit. These games are typically shown in one or two markets and almost never in Melbourne.

The AFL isnt looking at going to Vegas. And AFL Night grand finals have been speculated about annually since the first night final in '93. You can set your calendar by it.

Vlandys is doing great things for the NRL: - you cant really expect others to not try successful ideas. Its the way the world works. The AFL cant do Vegas. The AFL cant do expansion to NZ or PNG, and other than a third WA side, its expansion options in Australia are limited and not really cost effective.

That said the AFL also does itself no favours. AFLX was half arsed crap. It killed off Origin in the 90s with the full connivance of clubs and players. It has never fully embraced Thursday night football. It put teams in stupid places before more deserving and better supported areas.

A strong NRL is good for sport because it should make the AFL realise that it cant just f**k around any more.
I know the AFL can't do Vegas. No one cares outside of half of Australia. I was referring to their knee jerk reaction called 'Opening Round'.

The point being though, is that the NRL are now the innovators, it used to be the AFL.

NRL copied the magic weekend off Superleague. Sure they did it better but lets not get all American and pretend they are inventing things they are not.

Aussie Rules copied Rugby League, thanks for playing. hahaha

And if they had a worthy venue in the US to play at they would follow us over there as well.

The AFL have a good show called ‘The Front Bar’ with Mick Molloy etc.
I think the show’s format would be good for NRL.
NRL really needs a light hearted comedy based show that’s not just a repeat of the Footy Show.
There are too many NRL show hosts trying to create and become the headline, rather than reporting any thing relevant (yes Gordy that’s you.)
