Sydney, Christchurch, Melbourne - awesome job.

Just on the increased Sydney event game crowds, the more of them we can build throughout the season it kind of drowns out the Swans. At the moment, even though their TV ratings are pathetic, they have enough fans to look like the most popular team in the city. If we can have a couple of big Sydney event games each month (even if spread across a few different clubs) it starts to water the perception down that they are just miles in front of everyone else.

TV ratings tell all and the only thing that matter. Only afl zombies think otherwise.

Big crowds are just a nice add on.

A bit like your full stop after a post lol

But no, the visual effect of having a full stand of people is clear in its benefits, it allows clubs and the game to better sell itself to sponsors, it benefits the players and fans with improved atmosphere, it allows clubs to make more money from merchandise, food and beverage etc.

Suggesting big crowds are a nice add-on rather than an essential part of business going forward to drive revenue is wild. Of course TV brings in the biggest dollars, but that doesn't diminish the importance of bettering attendance culture.

Its a major part, but far from the only thing that matters.

Match returns delivered more money to AFL clubs last year (398m) than the AFL distribution from league HQ (380m) and accounted for 30% of total club revenue.

A big crowd makes better TV anyway.

Roosters after 4 games have an approx average of 25k at SFS this season.

Remaining fixtures at the ground

Raiders - Sunday 6PM
Cowboys - Sunday 4PM
Tigers - Sunday 2PM
Melbourne - Thursday night
Dogs - Friday 8PM
Souths - Friday 8PM

That raiders one will be a tough sell but hopefully eek out 15k with another win or two before that game.

Cowboys game is emergency services game. This year it is honouring health industry which always inspires respect from the community. I don't think 30k is out of the question but let's say 25k

Tigers game could be a real nice 25k crowd if both teams are still in the race for the 8

Melbourne another tough sell so let's say 15k for that too

Dogs game could be anything. It's the inaugural indigenous event at the SFS. Minimum 30k but 35 plus wouldn't surprise.

If both teams are a shot at the 8 in the last round we are looking at 35k plus.

So being optimistic with form let's go

15k
25k
25k
15k
35k
38k

That would see an average of 25k at the SFS. Overall average would be skewed by magic round and Gosford game.

For the purpose of an average: Magic and Gosford probably cancel each other out in a way based on the different capacities and expected crowds?

When you add on finals revenue from game days, the AFL made 20% more from crowds than TV.

No reason why NRL can’t do the same. Crowds is where the money is. To rely on broadcast revenue is lazy.

Yeah true but I just find greater utility in looking at averages at actual home grounds. Vegas, magic round, Perth double header etc just pad the stat and conversely, country games artificially lower it.

Fair chance that Bulldogs & Roosters will both break the current Sydney crowd average record looking at that.

Not exactly, Gosford can be pretty good, up to 20k. So if Valheru's 25k from 10 at Allianz works out, expect the 12 game average to be boosted up towards 26.5k

The Roosters vs Cowboys game last year drew 13k from memory. Even with a tribute to emergency services this year, I think the ceiling for that game would be closer to 20k.

I think Roosters vs Bulldogs and Roosters vs Rabbitohs are both candidates for sellouts. The Bulldogs game would require the Bulldogs to be at or near the top of the ladder. The Rabbitohs I think have become a ‘remember the date’ game at Allianz vs Roosters and agree it should be comparable to previous crowds (42k in 2022, 36k in 2023 and 37k in 2024).

6 out of the last 7 Storm home games have had crowds above 23k, including 2 finals last year but still impressive.

Current average is 23,348 (4 games). Average needed from remaining games to get 20k average in Melbourne for the first time, 18,087.

Remaining games:
R10 Vs Tigers, Sun 2pm
R14 Vs Cowboys, Fri 6pm
R17 Vs Shark, Sun 2pm
R20 Vs Sea Eagles, Sat 7:35pm
R23 Vs Broncos, Thu 7:50pm
R25 Vs Bulldogs, Fri 8pm
R26 Vs Roosters, Fri 8pm
Melbourne, city of 4m+, will asymptote towards 26k average. It's more or less a given.
