They are both good players when in, and they are both atrocious starters along with Guptill.

And the way Anderson plodded, it does worry me how much we need Williamson/McCullum to fire consistently.

In fairness to Anderson, he looked at sea against Starc and made some bad decisions, but Williamson aside he wasn't alone there...

Taylor is the worry imo, he and Williamson should make us very dangerous - good thing is he turns things around quickly

This NZ Cricket team reminds me of the 2001 Parramatta Eels team,so average looking on paper but yet somehow mysteriously they keep winning,doesn't make sense.

Be interesting to see who gets a run v Afghanistan, Hesson has already said Macca will get a spell and I'd expect a couple of the younger ones, Latham, McClenahan and maybe Mills to get a shot and put some heat on Guptill and Taylor..

Elliott has a wonky technique especially early on, his dismissals look especially awful for that.
But it works once he's had some time out there, just a shaky starter like half the team.

That dismissal and the one earlier on against Sri Lanka were well beyond wonky...

He was a teenager when he last toured those places...

He's going to be touring England and Australia in the next 12months... And he will be a completely different proposition to when he first toured.

Yeah agreed. He's very good on the slower pitches but the jury is out on him with the more bouncy tracks. As shiznit said though, he was very young in his previous outings on bouncy tracks so he'd be a lot more battle-hardened next time round.

Take out his 242* against SL at home and his test average plummets to just over 41
(I make reference to this, I did a post in the game thread outlining all of the 4 SLs front line quicks inc Mathews, had test bowling averages of well over 40.)

I have no doubt he has talent and should improve overseas, but at this stage he is solid , but nothing special in test cricket imo.

Williamson is our best by a mile currently, and could overtake Crowe if he keeps improving on his game.
He's one guy who is clearly working on his game all the time, unlike pretty much the rest of the side.

Fair enough, lot of hype about Steve Smith, how would you compare the two?

Smith's average in tests is hugely inflated by this recent series against a similarly poor bowling attack (worse imo) on very flat decks... and Williamson bats 3 with a walking wicket as one opener. I thin they're both excellent, but imo Williamson batting in a tougher spot and has a better technique.

There is no ODI comparison, ironically Williamson who was viewed as test specialist is, I think, pretty clearly superior there...

Both fine young players, but in fairness home press and fans have been talking both up a lot... with some justification, but we so seldom have world class bats you have to excuse us

:lol: I think each of the "big 3" has shown some fragility, certainly us too... ironically India have probably been the most convincing, they even field well...

Australia's quicks are impressive, but lacking a spinner, and Finch and Warner are not really that scray, the #3 is rubbish Clarke is coming back, and Maxwell is a basket case...

Same with us though, Guptill, Taylor and Elliott really basket cases too... Vetorri really is worth his weight in gold
