no way, without bands like black sabbath, led zep and deep purple then you wouldnt have metallica.

This goes without saying mate, if it wasnt for the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal then Metallica wouldn't be known today.

And since The Beatles were a major influence on Sabbath's Tony Iommi and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal wouldnt not have started if it wasn't for Sabbath then that puts Metallica further down the list.

Personally I would like to put Metallica up there but there is already a queue.

It's outta Zepplin, Stones, Kiss and U2. AC/DC just doesnt have the wide appeal as those 4 do.

How many different styles of music did they play, and were successful at it?

And how long were they successful for?

I'm a huge fan of Metallica, but they fail to even compare to Queen in many aspects of greatness.

Metallica influenced a new breed of music. Queen were dynamic and new and reamined leaders in the music industry up until the day Freddie Mercury died. SO many bands mentioned here were one dimensional and played a lot of similarly styled music, Queen played many varieties and were successful at each one.

Queen kicked arses in both stadium attendances and record sales, yet they seem to be continually overlooked by the majority of you all.

Metallica is far far ahead of radiohead.

How can you even place radiohead in the same category as some of the names listed here?

For starters when Metallica tried to change their music they screwed it up completely (care to remember Load and Reload?). When Radiohead did it, they created one of the best albums of this decade (Kid A).

You are trying to compare two completely different bands in 2 completely different genres. Sales wise - Metallica are all over Radiohead agreed. But in saying that Backstreet Boys would be all over Metallica sales wise too.

In regards to actual music - Radiohead are much more credible than Metallica.

and let me asure that if Burton was alive today he'd be in the top 5 bass players of all time.

Mate - I like Metallica as much as the next guy. But whilst they are good musicians and made some great music early on in their career - they haven't been able to evolve past the same old stuff they have always done. When they tried - they screwed it up royally, so much that most true Metallica fans admit thats when they sold out.

Sales mean nothing - seriously. This is where this topic has gone WAY off track. You want to talk about sales? Sales would mean bands like Nickleback, Creed and Marroon 5 are better bands than Metallica. Do you believe that?

No...neither do i...

As for Radiohead - they have evolved in every sense of the word. They have not stuck to the well worn track, dared to experiment and while some of it doesn't work (like much of Amnesiac which was essentially Kid A's rejects), some of it is brilliant.

Can you say the same for Load and Reload (Reload is Load's rejects granted)?

And I know of Metallica's brilliance - Master of Puppets, Kill 'em All, The Black Album - all fantastic albums. Radiohead have made 2 albums that are widely regarded as 2 of the best albums ever - The Bends and OK Computer.

Like I said...they are 2 very different bands in 2 very different genres - very hard to compare. Both are incredibly revolutionary. My opinion is that Radiohead is in front of Metallica - but it is just that - my opinion...
