Think of all the players who scored thousands of runs in domestic cricket and either couldn't crack or struggled to cement their positions in the national side - Siddons, Love, Maher, Bevan, Hayden, Elliott, Gilchrist, Lehmann, Hodge etc.

Most notably, add Mr Cricket to that list. He had to wait until he was 30 to get his baggy green cap. On the other hand, another player of similar age to him - Ponting - got the nod 10 years earlier. Guess you can call that 'being in the right place at the right time'.

Yes, of course we do. You're not going to tell me right now that nobody in Shield cricket can match it with Maxwell and Doherty?

Not saying that at all. Do you think however that we are having a lend of ourselves if we think there is this amazing amount of unselected and unknown talent out there that will suddenly turn our first XI into world beaters?

Positives from this test. We've found an improvement in our #1 spinner slot.

Negatives: top 4 underperforming. Need a session in the nets with Hayden. Also Maxwell is shit.

I reckon Cowan did well considering how poorly the others performed. Facing a 144 balls and taking the shine off the ball.

Id expect Lyon to be one of the first selected for Test No.3.

Otherwise, complete shit bar Clarke of course.

Cowan did exactly what was required of him, and not for the first time over the past 3-4 months, but I don't expect him to get any credit. Hughes and Watson need to go.
