I feel sorry for Raval. In 44 minutes he did not find the middle once. One of the most god awful innings I’ve ever seen. He only survived that long because Sri Lanka have bowled poorly imo.

The lad has no confidence. He would have been full to the boots of confidence if he didn’t commit Hari Kari last week at the Basin like an absolute stooge.

Commentators are going on as if that was plumb. Was always going down leg. WTF is Smith on about?

And now they’re bowling like Richard Hadlee/Wasim Akram to Williamson. Meanwhile Latham looks completely unphased out there.

edit. Now Latham is out. Fml.

Now Latham goes. NZ in trouble here. Williamson and Taylor will need to do some batting today.

17/2

It took them 40 odd minutes to work the pitch out. Southee would have had 3 or 4 himself by now. Ravals stroke though was horrific but when I see Kane batting like Richard de Groen then I acknowledge this pitch is a demon on the first morning. It will flatten out into a belter later.

Taylor averages 29.8 at Hagley and has only posted a half century once, v Bangladesh.

Nicholls and Taylor simply must be walking off the park together in 34 minutes.

Taylor looking streaky right now.

Basically, Taylor and Nicholls need to do a Kurunaratne and Matthews here. They took Sri Lanka from 9/3 to 142/4 with some no nonsense batting.

I think NZ need to work out if they think this pitch difficulty is going to remain or will quickly wear away. If it’s the former they need to anchor down , if the latter, accept one has your name on it and get aggressive so that your bowlers still get a shot on it.

What's the point in having two dour openers if they are both flat track bullies? This is the ideal scenario for those types of openers to prove their worth and both failed miserably.

hmmm, I think we're about 60-80 runs short for that approach

Yeah, I'm all aboard the 'throw Jeet off the train' train now

I'm hoping that we can somehow post 200-220 today and take a couple of wickets before stumps.
