2nd Test New Zealand vs India - Napier

Toss: Vettori has chosen to bat. And the other big news is Dhoni is not playing, as he is suffering from a back problem. It was Virender Sehwag who went out for the toss. Dinesh Kartik is the keeper. No other change for India. For NZ, Jeetan Patel has come in for Kyle Mills and Jamie How replaces Flynn.

Well .. well .. well.. dramatic start with Dhoni pulling off at the last minute. The game seems to have had quite a few mystical turns even before it has begun. First, they said it will be a seaming track, then some curious reports of hungry fungus and what not emerged, which was later denied by the curator. Later, New Zealand drafted in two spinners. And now Dhoni has pulled out. Oh well.

I am Sriram Veera and will be bringing you all the action from this Test. Our scorers will be Raghav and Sanjay. Let's hope we get a good game.

Vettori: Whenever you come to Napier you want to bat first. It looks a bit different wicket but you still want to bat first. Jamie How will bat at no 3. I think it will be a traditional Napier wicket- flat and you got to work for wickets. Franklin has been selected as a No 6 batsman and we want to give him the opportunity.

Sehwag: MS has hurt his back and that's why I am here. It looks a good hard track; there should be bounce for seamers. It's a good toss to lose!

Interesting Dhoni not playing... we will miss his captaincy

Jamie How is an absolute waste of space. Would of been better off with Vettori at 3.

u are right... your real batting starts from 4 down

No, wrong, we don't really have any real batting - quite simply our batting is embarrassing - perfect conditions for batting from what I've seen... we'll get rolled for <300 than India will score 550+ and our bowlers will be criticised

lot of edges... some dropped and some not carrying... kiwis could have been 4 or 5 down by now.

Figure we are due for a bit of luck though. And we've already had 1 dud call in this test, although I doubt McIntosh would have done much anyway.

233/3
Taylor 112*
Ryder 87*

Finally a partnership.... but we still need 450+ to give our bowlers a crack - wouldn't it be great to bat all tomorrow too?

That prediction looking about as good as you wanting Taylor dropped a few days ago

Yep.. the 'Taylor to be dropped' call was a shocker from both JJ and Iafeta... not that he batted well today, but when your number one back-up batsman is Jamie How the common sense thing to do is leaving him in the side to ride out his bad form.

Never been happier to have been off the mark...

In saying that, only half the batting job is done so far - we really need to bat them out of the game.

To be honest Ryder looked a class above Taylor to me, and on Taylor - it was hardly a great knock - I said he needs a kick up the arse, and I don't think that's changed - had he been dismissed early (as he probably should have been) would you be saying it was a bad call? He also could have run Ryder out, and ultimately even though he scored 150 got out to a stupid shot... not questioning his talent, but there's something lacking upstairs for me
