The selection of Voges over Burns because of 'experience' is perhaps, in hindsight, one of the worse and most short-sighted decisions Australian selectors have made in many years.
It has completely backfired on two fronts.
Firstly, they dropped Burns after a good test match and who knows what that did to his confidence. We have seen in the past how idiotic selection decisions have dented a players confidence. Also taking Burns would also have given him immeasurable experience.
Secondly, if we lose the Ashes, the bad decision to take Voges will have been compounded because our future (and current) batting lineup is looking extremely fragile. There is the high possibility Rogers retires soon, and with Clarke so out of form that honestly he would be dropped if he was any other player, only Warner and Smith would be worthy of a place in the team. That is why taking Voges over Burns is now looking like a massive mistake.
All this is hindsight, but I hated the decision to take Voges from day one. It lacked forward thinking. It showed the selectors only cared about one thing. Sure retaining the Ashes is a major objective, but not if it impedes in the development of a gun batsmen. A batsmen we need to be experienced in a few years.
All we can hope now is Voges shows why he was selected in the first place.
