Aussies make change for Boxing Day Test
Australia and India reveal changes to their XIs for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG

Australia have made one change to their XI for the third Domain Test, with Mitchell Marsh called in for Peter Handscomb.

Skipper Tim Paine revealed his side for the Boxing Day Test following Australia’s Christmas morning training session at the MCG.

Meanwhile India have suffered a blow with team management confirming spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has not fully recovered from an abdominal strain and won't be available for the MCG Test, with the BCCI also confirming their XI.

Mayank Agarwal will make his debut, while openers KL Rahul and Murali Vijay have both been axed.

Australia XI: Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (c), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

India XI: Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

India have ruled out Ravichandran Ashwin for the Boxing Day Test with the star offspinner yet to fully recover from his abdominal strain.

Team management confirmed the news on the eve of the third Test against Australia.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is firming to play at the MCG while pace-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya is also in the mix.

Jadeja was ruled out for the first two Tests after having injections in his shoulder but is expected to prove his fitness.

Last time the sides met in a Boxing Day fixture, a lifeless MCG pitch ensured there was no prospect of anything other than a draw.

With the current series tied at 1-1, Indian skipper Virat Kohli was optimistic enough work had been done on the pitch to ensure a result.

“Seeing the pitch now, it has much more grass than it had last time,” Kohli told reporters.

“I hope that it’s a lively pitch. I hope that it does as much as it did in the first two games because as a side, you know you’re always in for a result that way.

“The surface, what I saw yesterday looked pretty dry underneath. There’s a good coverage of grass which should keep the surface intact.

“I think it should have enough for the bowlers to be interested on all days of the Test match and hopefully it’s a much more lively wicket than the last time we played here.”

India pulled the extraordinary move to drop both KL Rahul and Murali Vijay, after the openers handed in less than impressive performances in the opening two Tests of the series.

Hanuma Vihari looks the batsman who will be elevated to the top of the order while Mayank Agarwal will make his Test debut.

Australia have recalled all-rounder Mitch Marsh for the Test, dropping struggling batsman Peter Handscomb.

It is the second time in as many years Handscomb has been dropped two Tests into the summer, with Marsh’s part-time seamers getting him the nod at the MCG.

“I’m sure Pete would be upset. I think he’s had conversations with the selectors that there’s a few things he needs to work on and Pete is open to that,” captain Tim Paine told reporters.

Paine added it’s likely the Aussies will “need his bowling at some stage” during the Test in the warm conditions in Melbourne.

Apparently weather no worse than Adelaide or Perth makes Mitch Marsh’s bowling a requirement.

Marsh's bowling is irrelevant unless he scores runs because he bats at 6. Anything else is just hogwash by the selectors and coach. Because if he doesn't score any runs what is 3-5 overs an innings going to do?

Our great allrounder, plays his 31st test tomorrow:

Tests: 30
Wickets: 35
Ave: 42.46
SR: 72.03
Best: 4/61
Wkt/match: 1.13
Innings: 51
Runs:1200
Ave: 26.08
100/50: 2/3
Lever Index: > 9000
If only he could flip his batting and bowling averages. I think the selectors do.

Well, I suppose Marsh is just as likely to score runs as Handscomb right now, so whatever....Handscomb did have a shot

Agree

hopefully Marsh tears India a new one, with bat or ball don't care, though either is unlikely

Everyone, I have a solution;

My dear wife bought me a rather high alcohol single-malt whiskey for Christmas.

I’m going to put that whole bastard away tonight, and I won’t have to see a single ball tomorrow.

You’ll wake up 10 minutes from stumps just in time to see Big Levers Marsh bring up his double ton.

I just hope it's not a road like it was last year, they could've batted for 2 weeks on that surface last year

A tonne of pressure on MMarsh to perform here. If he doesn't CA will look even more stupid than it already does for how badly it's done the scheduling this year. MMarsh is probably a better option than Handscombe, but that's not really a big statement, it's kind of like saying winning the lottery is better than not winning the lottery.

In the midst of a test series and shield cricket is on Hiatus for about 2 and half months, doesn't resume until after all tests have been played. Brilliant.

I think we're the one's being played.

MMarsh is on a hiding to nothing

He score some runs and contributes, it will be because its a road, or he was lucky, shouldn't be there anyway etc...

he fails then, then forum meltdown

I know what id like to see...
