At keeping? Perhaps.
Even on the balance of keeping and batting, he’s still probably near the top.
But captaincy? Highly unlikely.
May as well leave him there as figurehead but “delegate” all the onfield tactical decisions to at least Smith

Smith was tactically no better than Paine at any time throughout his captaincy. Add his abject failure of leadership in Cape Town and I see no reason to ever consider him again, personally. As a "delegated" captain or otherwise.

And if he was truly that great he'd be doing that now anyway.

Yeah I didn’t think Smith was a great captain but Paine is really uninspiring.
Surely someone else onfield could see the poor field arrangements and panicking bowling changes. Or someone not in the side who could match Wade’s 2 boundaries from an over of deliveries

Surely some of the blame must go back onto the bowlers???

Could you imagine McGrath bowling with 1 slip against someone like Pant who goes hard at everything or Warne with a deep point when India needed about 100 off 15 overs and a bloke with a torn hammy just standing and blocking??

Our bowling plans were just putrid after tea who is responsible for that these days???

Bet you whoever they are they are bald.

I can't even find who the bowling coach is. A search seems to suggest Troy Cooley was most recent, but he was hired for the Ashes and the WC. I can't find anything at a glance about him being rehired after that.

I also found an article from the end of 2019 saying that part of the "shake up" would be that bowling and fielding coach roles would be absorbed into the permanent structure, ie taken over by JL and the permanent assistants whoever they are, and temporary coaches brought in as needed.

Seems like a recipe for success.

I saw that Ranga Gomer Andrew McDonald giving Paddy some tips in the tea break and I had a chuckle.

Imagine him and Langer in charge of the bowling plans???

Elite derpness.

most of the field positions, in principal, are agreed or at least discussed at the team meetings so most fielders know where they need to be when a certain batsmen is on strike

they may manipulate a few changes on the field but most of it is discussed before hand so yeh, the bowlers have an input, as they know where they want to bowl to each batsman

It was Elite failure from all, especially the space cadet coach.

If Paine gets hooked after the Gabba test then Paddy is the VC in waiting.

who else is there Warner ? Head ? One will retire soon and one cant hold his spot in the team

I dont think it was all that bad, pitch was not a typical 5th day pitch and it really favoured the batsmen, despite that we did create chances but dropped catches

We had the opportunities, I would not be blaming Paddy or Haze they did their job with no support from the fielders or the keeper, not to mention the field positions.

And I think some credit should go to India.

PS: Lyon is shit too.

Lol, a typically OTT public reaction to a nothing incident. But an Australian did it, so it's OUTRAGEOUS!

Imagine being Paddy Cummins, and taking advice from Andrew f**king McDonald.

What could he possibly hope to gain ?
Tips on elite mediocrity?
:joy: one of the worst test cricketers ever trying to 'coach' Sir Patty. All part and parcel of bonglord Langer's magic carpet ride
