I’m watching the test program at the moment and it was released in March this year... and in that they highlighted that he’s a weird dude that does that everywhere... in the shower, in the hallway at the hotel, at the airport... he looks like he has some sort of OCD where he gets in his batting stance and does his mark as often as he can...

looking into it further in the last day or so he does that in the field in the game all the time... no batsman has ever complained about him ever messing with their mark and correct me if I’m wrong but no one complained here either...

the only reason this is an issue is because it’s Smith... that’s it.

Steve Smith has responded to claims of cheating following the third Test at the SCG, admitting he has been left “quite shocked and disappointed” by the fallout.

Smith was seen on stump camera walking on the pitch and shadow batting but it was what he did next that had some people confused.

He appeared to scuff up markings on the crease used as a guide for where stumps are behind batters.

Smith though has shot down any suggestions this is any indication of cheating, instead insisting it is a regular, harmless habit of his - a similar point made by skipper Tim Paine.

“I have been quite shocked and disappointed by the reaction to this,” Smith told the Daily Telegraph.

“It’s something I do in games to visualise where we are bowling, how the batter is playing our bowlers and then out of habit I always mark centre.”

It is consistent with the messaging put forward by Paine on Tuesday, who said Smith was “really disappointed” with how his actions had been interpreted.

“I have spoken to Steve about it,’’ Paine told reporters on Tuesday. “He is really disappointed with the way it has come across.

“If you watch Steve Smith play Test cricket that is something he does every single game five or six times a day. He does this a lot.

“He is always in the batting crease batting. As we know he has those many Steve Smith quirks. One of them is that he was always marking centre. He was certainly not changing (Pant’s) guard.

I think that Paine unravelled. I don't think he crossed any significant line by calling Ashwin a dickhead. It was woeful sledging, but hardly close to the bone. Obviously, the main issue was his tactics and his catches and those issues are amplified by his poor performance with the lip.

Wade is a dick and his theatrics were probably the closest thing to boorishness that I saw from the Aussies.

I mostly wish Timmy would focus on doing one thing right. He's trying to captain, catch and sledge and failing dismally at all three.
How about trying to catch Timmy and go from there?
Also maybe a search on how to set fields. Might find a trick the batsmen hate if you look hard enough.

Paine is the captain and takes (and has taken) responsibility

but he doesn’t set fields in a vacuum, they have plans (coaches, leadership group, bowlers etc) and senior players are on the field... ex captain and v/c, a spinner with nearly 400 test wickets and three senior experienced fast bowlers...

Again, he’s responsible and feeling the pressure, but a new captain would change nothing... he’s clearly shown that atm he’s the right man for the job... maybe others need to step up too?

Or actually just accept that India had some luck but also fought like buggery and deserve kudos for that
