And we proceed to lose 4 quick wickets this morning

A poor effort considering the team put up 408 in the first innings even though it was far from the best batting performance

That 408 was dead set 250 under par, that was where the match was lost!

The 3rd innings curse has come back to haunt us yet again.

We may have underperformed in the first innings, but think of how many tests over the past decade and a half we have lost due to a poor 3rd innings, especially against India (Adelaide 2003, Mohali 2010, Bangalore 2010 are ones that immediately come to mind).

If the lead after the 2nd innings is generally no more than 100, that 3rd innings becomes so important in the context of a test match because the team batting in that innings is caught in two minds: whether or not to go and try to score at a quick rate and play for the win, or play for a draw. And we more often than not seem to falter in this situation. It's a mentality in our batsmen which has existed for too long.

The thing is, Australia played well yesterday, they bowled to a plan and got the Indians out, and they contained the lead to be less than 100 - the Indian score "Could have been anything" when they were 0 for 285!

But Australia undid all its good work in the final session by losing wickets before getting rid of what was a small (but tricky) first innings deficit

Please tell me how many scores of 650+ were made in the past 10 years.

Does it matter, the first innings from where we were we should have made 600, 500 at a BARE minimum. You add 100 to our total now...we almost are safe despite this disaster of a 2nd innings!

We would have declared well before 600 in this match if we were able to get there due to the series situation.

A 'correct' homework answer by all after this test will be 'Mitchell Starc must be promoted ahead of Peter Siddle in the batting order'.

I see Australia lead now by 65. If we are to get bowled out, it would be handy if we can get to a lead of preferably 150. We'd have a slight chance of winning. Also, we need to bat out as many overs as possible. One more over batted out = one less over India has at batting

Theres no cricket revolution here folks, 2.60 runs an over

No super fit athlete, altitude training or revolutionary game plan is going to resolve this game

edit - fighting grimly for a draw? that's not the Australian way

Not with a country that's obsessed with winning

Made it to lunch at least. Either batting to tea or adding 50 or so runs will see the match safe. Still lose the series here though.

BunniesMan - I'll admit when I'm wrong. Hughes 69 has put some runs on the board. Didn't see his dismissal, but heard it may have been iffy. Anyway...nice to see your faith rewarded with a contribution score in the 2nd innings. If it's enough (from any of them), we'll see later on.

Anyway...off to ANZ. Pity they don't show the cricket on the big screen and punters watch the live play on the field. :)
