gotta say though, huge improvement in Kiwi cricket over the last few years

no one knows just what goes on over the ditch cuz they play a test match about once every 18 months, this will mke a few teams take a bit of notice

be interesting to see how they fare against the Aussies atm, probably a toss of the coin I would think

drew the last series with you, and you've gotten worse :)

Seriously though, I think we should look to compete hard with anyone in our conditions... in Australia, I think we'd ask a few more questions than the Sri Lankans did... but Aust (like India) is a tough place for anyone to do well...

We're getting there thats for sure. Credit where it's due must go to Hesson for giving Fulton another crack where everyone (except Iafeta) thought he was mad, and getting McCullum out of the top order and batting where he belongs at 6.

He may be hated for his handling of the Taylor saga, but personally I think he's done some good things with the side.

It makes a big difference when the batsmen put runs on the board. Hopefully this can continue in England.

Yep this, I was really impressed that Hesson picked the same squad over all three tests. It paid off with both Fulton and Southee. Our questions marks at the moment are Brownlie, B.Martin and Wagner but I'd persist will all three of them for now.

Really good signs.

Yeah they all deserve to go to England. They all have competition to keep their spots too.

On a side note, it must be said that Monty has saved the English with the bat a few times now. He's a bit of a hero imo.

Monty is a legend, makes up for any limitations as a cricketer by giving it 100% every time.

Thrilling test match. Outstanding batting from England to come out of it with a draw. It seemed Martin went to the toilet, maybe nerves? He was quite loose and genuinely not threatening unfortunately. I must ask, is that the best test match in the past 3-4 years?

All in all, a good solid core of cricketers to work with. Rutherford looks the best attacking opening bat prospect in many a year, Fulton's comeback was excellent, Williamson will go onto have a top test career, Taylor is Taylor, McCullum is coming to fruition finally.. its now that last batting spot of Brownie's that could fall to Ryder. I think its telling that Luke Ronchi probably won't get a tour spot, even though he's had an excellent season for Wellington, when it seemed a lay down faizzre that he should get a Black Caps spot upon availability. The one thing they still miss, and have never really ever had in their history, is a top class spin bowler. Southee, Boult, Wagner, Bracewell give them some excellent pace bowling options, and obviously McClenaghan came from nowhere this year to excel. There appears to be some good cricketers coming through - Matt Henry, Carl Cachopa (all three of them have talent TBF), Corey Anderson, Jeet Raval, and some older players came back to pressure on selectors, obviously Fulton got rewarded but Michael Papps also must present questions for the limited overs team.

Speaking of Brownlie, probably the moment that I thought oh dear, here we go was when he shelled Bell. Bell in an ultra defensive mode doesn't give you many chances, and you have to take them. It would have given New Zealand two quick wickets with the new ball, Boult's tail would have up, and the English middle and lower order exposed to the new ball. That was critical.

I think we'll move from #8 fairly quickly, credit to Mike Hesson and a slice of immense humble pie to me, Brendan McCullum is definitely the guy to lead this team. He's aggressive as a captain. And thats great when you have genuine swing from Boult, seam from Southee, and a get up there kazaley attitude in Wagner and Bracewell.

I think that is unfair to Ross, the fellas are maturing is all.

Brendan had 19 wickets, Ross rarely had that, I do not think that is because he is a poor leader.

That said glad I observed, test cricket, true test of character, Prior, passed in spades. So did the kiwis.

I think once the pain has gone away I'll look back on this test and think of how bloody good it was. That last half hour was just sheer drama of the highest quality. McCullum taking the final gamble with Williamson, and then it paying off not once but twice and suddenly it's pandemonium. Then it's the farming the strike game, Prior tries to get the single to retain the strike but he happens to hit a gap and it goes for four, the Kiwi crowd cheering it all the way there . Then later Monty going for the single and diving ludicrously short of the line.....

Then there's all the other stuff previous. Boult's spell, the Fulton double, McCullum cutting loose, our crazy catches last night, our drops today, Prior's chances, Broad getting skittled, taking a bat handle to the throat and calling for the review while on his knees......just amazing. The Hobart test was special for us as Black Caps fans but I think this test as a whole was better. It still hurts not getting the win but damn it was good.

So good to see quality test cricket, the T20 circus doesn't even compare to the drama and nationwide interest today's match generated.

It doesn't even matter who won really, this is the sport at its finest.

Thats the best thing about cricket

Australian teams wont like it, but England personifies the spirit of the game

^ The Australian cricket team does not do that, its not in its values. Australia lives and dies by the sword. ie you got us beat, we wont even play the last 2 days.

Its not about runs scored, how fast you can score, its about compromising yourself for the sake of the cause of the game. And cricket is not "a simplified game" about who "scored the most". In many ways a very good game of test cricket almost resembles life itself. Or a very good J.R.R Tolkien novel

easily the most exciting, dramatic day of sport i've witnessed. i was proud to be there.

i'm so f**king sunburnt though. i'm a decidedly worrying shade of red.

martin could never find the right length, would be my only complaint. if we'd had an extra quick (for us) bowler to really steam in and bend his back and land it on a good length we might have a different story.

more tests at eden park please (did i just say that??). the atmosphere today was stunning.

Rosco was a good captain imo who was only gonna get better. Having said that, I don't mind McCullum either and him batting in his right position at 6 will help his captaincy as it takes the pressure of him a bit to perform with the bat.

McCullum >>>>>> Taylor as a captain

Good thing is they seem to get on ok... from what he said today though, Taylor not at all happy - I assume that's still with management, but who knows... hopefully it doesn't impact on him and team... in reality we need him and hopefully Ryder, and then we can compete with most

Taylor wasn't too bad as captain. We did draw two away series under his leadership so i'll give him that at least.

Hopefully him and Hesson can patch up their relationship (if there are any problems) which will understandably take a bit of time.

If Wright had stayed, Taylor might have been ok...

Anyway, I have a huge problem with how they did it, but not who is captain now...

Still can't get over Brownlie's drop, the ball hitting the stumps, and Panesar's ridiculous dive, that was hysterical... what a test, shame we couldn't quite nail it
