Kicks off tomorrow 9am (Saturday)

Stokes thinking about us all the time, god luv him.

"We had to make some decisions around what we think is best for the team going into that Ashes series," Stokes said at the time. "We want to go out there and we want to get that urn back."

"I know whenever we spoke about Australia there is a lot looking towards that, but there are still massive series before that," Stokes said. "We have India. And I think through my own fault, I maybe spoke a little too much about the Ashes and putting too much emphasis on that series, considering how much cricket we had to play before that.

"I quite like staying in the present, in the moment. But it is quite tough when you've got an Ashes coming around the corner.

First test was largely about our inability to catch - dropping Brook 5 times was unforgiveable, that's what took it away from us. They destroyed us in the second, finally Blundell found some runs, but Williamson didn't and so much is on him at the moment, and he's effectively opening given how Conway has been playing (Latham only marginally better)

Conway is out becoming a father, despite looking horrific I am not convinced they would have actually dropped him... Williamson and Mitchell need to make a statement, and Latham, Young, Ravindra, Blundell and Phillips need to provide some support (thankfully there are signs of life with the latter two, and Young is coming off good performances in India)

Anyway, we simply have to win - a series loss against this lot is already incredibly poor, 3-0 would be catastrophic, and careers beyond Southee's should end if that happens (starting with coaches)

I am worried out bowling attack will be that extra year older next year and there batsman may slog there way to victory. Its basically what they are planning for.

We can't lose the Ashes at home it would be catastrophic considering we havent won in England since 2001 and they beat us in 2010 here.

I think mentally you lot weren't in this series.

A lot had gone into beating India, which was beyond incredible. Series win for the ages

Sometimes as a followup, 6 weeks later, and on own home soil, the expectation that you will waltz through a series, you get complacent , and mentally don't give as much (see dropped catches)

Remove the India series I have no doubt kiwis are shaper more focused in this one.

As long as we pick guys that are 100% fit and have form, we will be ok

Preparation and mental focus will be huge, hope we dont play useless white ball cricket leading up to it, or if we do, the test guys can have a run in Shield cricket instead

English win the toss and bowl.
For NZ: Smith out, Santner in.

ENG: Woakes out, Potter in.

A real changing of the guard for the poms' bowling line up - Atkinson, Carse, Potts and Bashir. The three quicks look like goodies, not sold on Bashir.

Every time I’ve watched Young he’s looked a good player. Surprised he only averages 30 in Tests.

He is a good player, seldom played two tests back to back…. Think that’s a big factor, and played all through the order

Gosh that was unlucky, 99% of the times it misses the stumps

The great Kane out for 44

315/9…. Williamson was set and unlucky, Latham too. Ravindra, Mitchell, Blundell and Phillips’ dismissals were all embarrassing tbh…. Still in it, but had a platform to dominate
