3rd Test: South Africa v Australia at Cape Town Mar 1-5, 2014

So long as we don't go back to a new spinner every second bloody test again. I'd only drop Lyon if he has a prolonged dry spell and there's a genuine challenge from someone else for the spot.

In fairness to lyon the pitch wasn't doing much for him.

Agreed. It wasn't doing much for the quicks either. He could have thrown some more balls up or dart them in but short of Warne's magic not many spinners would have done too great on this pitch against a batting lineup that specialises in 150 over second innings match saving draws.

Time for 4 or 5 test series against South Africa? They've basically replaced the Windies as one of our chief rivals (alongside the Poms and India).

Would be great but the saffas won't go for it.

They want to play a boxing day test/new years test combo in south Africa every year.

We'd have to pay them off for it to be any chance.

Great test, and a very good series.

Really pleased for Harris, a fine test bowler.

Waited until the last day, but the Jaapies finally showed why they are the best test side in the world - they win often, and they are usually fecking hard to beat. Maybe Philander will be the replacement opener!

Aust on the up, once RSA decide the way forward they will remain strong... India have a young and talented top 6, NZ on the up, and Pakistan and Sri Lanka remain useful... The Poms wil improve too - test cricket's looking good, and Aust and RSA will always be interesting...

All teams have substantial flaws/holes/questions which means they're all beatable.

Well done Aust, big performance to beat them

Pretty epic series win tbh. Really establishes Australia as the #1 team in the world again.

 Just read through it all as well, quality read.

Seems like we bowled far to short most of the day but Rhino did the job, what a player he has been for us, hopefully this is not his last hurrah for Aus.

Taped the days play so after work I will get home a few rums and the reply sounds like awesome viewing.

Barking at Faf?? Lol that's hilarious.

And the best thing is Smith goes out as he came in, a loser.

And against the might of Australia no less

What a result.

Spewing though - that massive storm that ripped through Sydney yesterday knocked out both my satellite dish and my phone line/wifi, so I couldn't watch day 5 on Foxtel or Foxtel Go!

Actually, I believe the boss of the old board was trying to get their Boxing Day / NYE tests happening.

But since the change, I believe the Saffas are interested in playing Aust Boxing Day / NYE again AND looking at 5 test series.

 That $100 on the draw was the best money I ever spent.

I'm loving seeing the mongrel back in Australian cricket too. The woof send off to Faf and Clarke telling Steyn to STFU and not take a backwards step...priceless.

20 years and still no South African series win against Australia at home.

Apparently Oscar Pistorius isn't the only legless sportsman in South Africa ;-)

Plenty of heat out there and I like the mongrel that Clarkie adds, although by his own admission he overstepped the mark.

I also like what Patto brings with his extra pace and ability to bowl reverse swing.

He would be disappointed with some of the crap that he bowled last night but he's underdone and will get better. Way too much short stuff, no point in setting a batsman up with the short stuff unless you have plan to pitch a few up which he didn't.

And Lyon ? dunno

I think we need to keep looking, Smiffy got more turn than him.
