Yeah I thought Carney is actually pretty well spoken and a decent enough commentator to be able to hold his own, they need to f**k off the other muppets because they are simply not up to calling the game and showing a somewhat lack of bias and telling the viewers how it is and not how they (the commentators) want it.

Carney is great, because he is current. He's not long retired, and knows the mentality and systems in place in Australia, having played there not long ago. He hosts a TV show over here, and it's quality.

Stevo is useless, I have no idea how people like him. He must watch a different game to everyone else at the stadium or at home.

Phil Clarke does nothing to add to the call either, he chips in at halftime with boring statistics.
The SL and Sky sports have to ask themselves who they want their market to be. If they want to attract fans, and make the game grow they have to move into the 21st century.

Top game, really enjoyed it. The Kiwis seemed to intent on the niggle rather than playing for completions. They were always going to be p against it giving away 9(?) penalities.

If England win would that make it 3 different winners in the last 3 series? Probably good for the game for England to win.... but, I'll still be cheering for the Kangaroos.

The commentators? Prefer them to Gould touching Rabs up during the call and talking all manner of BS. The parochial commentary is part of touring, just rejoice in it, it's only a few weeks a year. BTW, SKY seems to be on a make work sponsorship from the Brit Guv'ment... how many pundits do you need with microphones? :) Top marks to Carney though.

what is it with the England mascot? is it a Knight, a beer can or a money box?

Before i moved to Australia, i disliked Eddie and Stevo and loved listening to the 9 calls on the games i got to see.

Now living here i despise Rabs and Gus but like the Sky commentary team, they are a little biased but i dont really care about that and given the pain British RL has had to endure in the past 40 years it can be excused.

If Aussies want to blame anyone then vent against 9/Fox who wont send their own commentators.

Also Sky sports coverage shits all over 9 and is marginally better than Fox IMO.

Eddie and Stevo are like the equivalent of the Ch9 cricket commentary team. They've been calling games together for a long time, since the 1988 Great Britain tour of Australia, and they have been at BSkyB since day 1. They won't be going away anytime soon.

But yeah, although we got the Sky commentary for last week's Wembley test on Ch9, I watched a replay of that game with the BBC broadcast and the commentary was so much better. Not just the commentary, but the whole presentation (pre-match panel hosted by that female, can't remember her name. She did a very good job and was very professional. No extreme bias or excessive bitching like the Sky mob) Too bad BBC don't get more tests and are pretty much limited to the QF/SF/F of the Challenge Cup (which has lost its prestige over the years since SL rose to prominence as the major tournament). The test match two years ago in the 2009 4 nations at DW Stadium between England and Australia was the first test BBC covered since the 2000 RLWC. Hopefully they'll get some of the marquee matches for the 2013 RLWC.

Excluding soccer (which has the overwhelming sporting monopoly in the UK, and they are the highest rating sport on PayTV by a country mile over there), it's a double edge sword for all the other sports in the UK. I know RL in England needs the money (hence Sky coverage), but more matches on BBC would give the game some much needed FTA exposure. I know a lot of ppl who were talking about the game last week, simply because it was shown on FTA over there. I think someone posted an interesting link here on the forums not so long ago, about a report that was compiled which talked about the decrease in exposure and tv ratings since Sky got exclusive rights to show RL matches back in the mid-90s. Like rugby league, cricket over there has suffered a similar fate since Sky got exclusive rights to internationals after the high-rating 2005 Ashes series on Ch4 over there. Yes, the counties over there were for the PayTV move since they got a lot more money in return, but the compromise is that the huge drop off in media exposure since 2006 has taken a hit on the sport's popularity in the country, even though they are currently no.1 in the test cricket ratings.

I was the same, but the other way. I hated Rabs and co when I was in Australia, since I moved to England though, I appreciate them more.

Sky is nowhere near fox. For a start, you can't watch more than 2 games a week!
Unless you support one of the big 5, good luck seeing your team.

I know, I live in England. If the game wants to grow in England, it needs an overhaul. Even a new set...or a talk show, something! The midweek shows, apart from Supermen, are terrible as well. They need a "Take it like a fan" or "Soccer AM" equivalent. Something modern, light and fun. There is a market for fans below 45, but sadly the SL don't seem to want to do anything about it.

Just saw Isaac Luke's effort. What a disgrace.

Just guaranteed he'll be labeled a grub for the rest of his career.

A lot of credit needs to go to Steve MacNamara. Despite some poor performances he's stuck solid with a very similar team since 'The Exiles' games (apart from the inclusion of the NRL players and Rangi Chase). His team has gradually got better, every game since 'The Exiles' and in the last two games they've been prepared to the minute.

Undoubtably that was the most polished performance from an English team I've seen in a long time. There was no hype, no opposition underestimating them, they just outplayed NZ for 80 minutes and finished well over the top of them.

Hopefully that will shut those kiwis up until the team can start playing with more consistency. Fluking a couple of games may make you world champs on paper, but now what most people had known has been confirmed.

Perhaps if they spend as much time practicing how they play as they do their haka they may see some improvements.

Championships is what it's all about. World champions and foru nations champions.
Your post is about as incisive as a Michael Luck run.

Yeah I have to say...all the back slapping by the poms....it really means little if they (and they'll most probably) falter against the Aussies.
It's really great that you flogged NZ but they have the trophies....and this will just be chalked up to yet another mediocre English effort.

Match report:

Four Nations 2011: England 28-6 New Zealand

Page last updated at 19:57 GMT, Saturday, 12 November 2011

By Shamoon Hafez
BBC Sport England (8) 28

  • Tries: Briscoe, Hall, Graham, Tomkins
  • Goals: Sinfield 6

New Zealand (0) 6

  • Tries: Nightingale
  • Goals: Marshall

Ryan Hall (left) scored another sublime try for England as they reached a second successive Four Nations final on home soil England reached the final of the Four Nations after a tremendous victory over world champions New Zealand at the KC Stadium.
Hull winger Tom Briscoe set the home side on their way with a try in the corner and Ryan Hall added another.
Although England dominated, Jason Nightingale pulled a try back for the away side to give the Kiwis hope.
But further scores from James Graham and Sam Tomkins meant England set up a final with Australia at Elland Road.
After the disappointment of 2009, when England were comprehensively beaten 46-16 by the Kangaroos, they have the perfect opportunity to settle the score and win the Four Nations for the first time.
Even though they will go into the game as favourites, the Australians will need to be wary of an England side that took apart New Zealand with ease.
In addition to the four tries, Kevin Sinfield was excellent with the boot, recording a 100% conversion rate.
I think it was really controlled, measured, efficient, effective - and we knew it had to be that way if we were going to get across New Zealand. We had to show patience - I think they held us up over the try-line four times and that was a tremendous effort from them
Steve McNamara England coach
The hosts had a let-off two minutes into the game as full-back Tomkins failed to cope with a high Benji Marshall kick. Scrum-half Kieran Foran touched down for New Zealand but the try was ruled out by the video referee for offside.
The visitors were dishing out some heavy hits, particularly targeting Tomkins. Jeremy Smith went on report after dropping an elbow onto the face of the Wigan man, but the Kiwi was fortunate not to have suffered more severe punishment from the referee.
England put pressure on the New Zealand line, foraging for an opening to break the deadlock, and both Ben Westwood and Kirk Yeaman went close but the visitors' defence held firm.
Tomkins' pace and fleet-footedness was causing the opposition problems, his 60m dash after sneaking into a narrow gap in the New Zealand backline eventually halted by scrambling Kiwi defence.
Despite having most of the possession in the first 25 minutes England failed to notch any points, but the pressure finally paid.
New Zealand were penalised for an off-the-ball tackle on centre Jack Reed and from the resulting penalty, the hosts switched the ball with quick hands and Yeaman fed Hull team-mate Briscoe, who dived over in the corner for the game's first try. Sinfield added the conversion.
Last five England v Australia games

  • England 20-36 Australia, London 2011
  • Australia 34-14, Melbourne 2010
  • England 16-46 Australia, Leeds 2009
  • England 16-26 Australia, Wigan 2009
  • Australia 52-4 England, Melbourne 2009

The Leeds captain popped over a penalty just before half-time, after Isaac Luke cynically twisted Rangi Chase's knee, as Steve McNamara's men deservedly led at the break.
England made the perfect start to the second half. Ryan Hall is making a habit of squeezing in for tries from impossible angles and the Leeds man did it again.
Sinfield's high kick was snapped up by Reed, who offloaded the ball to Westwood, and Hall finished the move with precision, as he did against Australia at Wembley, sneaking in at the corner despite the attention of Foran.
New Zealand talisman Marshall was trying to spark his team into life and saw Briscoe as the weak link in the English defensive line, but the try-scorer was equal to Marshall's testing grubber kicks.
However, the Kiwis were determined to hit back and after a sweeping move, quick hands saw the ball reach the Australian-born Nightingale to score in the corner.
The home side were resilient though, and caught New Zealand on the counter. Briscoe snatched the ball and raced upfield and with the visitors' defence in trouble Graham took advantage to score.
England put the icing on the cake as Jamie Jones-Buchanan escaped the grasp of a tiring New Zealand backline and fed Tomkins, who went in under the posts.
Sinfield kicked his sixth goal and set up a date with old foes Australia in Leeds next week.
England: Tomkins, Hall, Reed, Yeaman, Briscoe, Sinfield, Chase, Graham, Roby, Peacock, Wilkin, Westwood, Heighington.
Replacements: Carvell for Graham (17), Jones-Buchanan for Heighington (19), Morley for Peacock (22). Widdop for Roby (77).
New Zealand: Locke, Beale, Brown, Mannering, Nightingale, Marshall, Foran, Matulino, Leuluai, Packer, Manu, Blair, Smith.
Replacements: Taylor for Locke (11), Glenn for Matulino (16), Waerea-Hargreaves for Packer (18), Luke for Leuluai (32).
Attendance: 23,447
Referee: Matt Cecchin (Australia).

Just saw Luke's ankle twist, what the hell is wrong with this guy?

Really hope he gets a few weeks for that.
I asked the question in the 50uff$ forum, and got the following replies:

You can clearly see that Issac was holding his leg so as not to get kicked in the head.

Chase has a bad habit of lashing out in tackles,Issac was only protecting himself.

Is that the lamest defence of the tri/4 nations ever? Really disappointed with the Kiwi effort today - seemed intent on showing who was the toughest rather than winning the game. Some good signs in the English side. Good team effort and good to see Sir Sinfield get some recognition with the MOM. 42nd game of this year - some effort. Tomkins has earnt my respect having disliked him for the past two seasons with his silly gamesmanship - quality player and looks the business. He needs to fire again in the final. How long has it been since England have had such a settled side?

As for the commentary bias - it's british coverage intended for british audience. If nine/fox are too tight to send their own commentary team then what do people expect? Agree Carney has added some good insight - used to enjoy Tony Rea's contribution's before his move to the dark side. Sky would probably show more games if the RFL would let them - at the end of the day clubs need bodies through the turnstiles and showing all games live on tv would damage attendances
