Australia v England they appoint an Aussir ref and NZ v Samao the ref is a kiwi. No other sport would do this and it just makes ours look a complete joke!

Actually in Rugby and in soccer they've done that sort of thing on numerous occasions.

All international matches should be refereed by a neutral ref. Common sense. I don't know any sport that doesn't have neutral refs. Imagine the outrage it would cause if this kind of thing happened in soccer.

In rugby they use neutral refs but All Blacks sometimes get the Kiwis ref who moved to Australia. When it happens in soccer though that's just straight corruption.

i dont really think in this day and age a neutral ref is needed. i think its overated and questions the integrity of the ref. Id rather the best ref chosen regardless of their nationality.

the issue is interpretation more than it is the nationality of the ref. to the poms who are worried - all the NRL refs suck consistently so you'll get the same shit calls as we will

Exactly. I feel so freaking sorry for the young bloke...as I did Mullo. People say the hate they spray is directed at the selectors for picking him but it's really not, it ends up being levelled squarely at the player. What do people want him to do? Turn down the opportunity to play for his country when selected? Lol.

It's always the young rookie that gets teared down, even if they weren't even responsible for the loss (e.g. Mullo in SOO). Really nobody wants to see him succeed and I bet will be death riding him all game hoping he makes a mistake. Awful really.

You can bet that if Aus lose it won't be because of a winger. It'll be because only one prop was picked in the entire side. Just watch though, it'll be the 18-year-old winger that cops the brunt of the abuse.

Although perenara is more biased to his paymasters Australia than any Aussie ref would be. Might be good for england, it's not right tho!

I do not think many people are questioning the integrity of the refs as such. However, the AFL are no longer interested in being seen not to be cheating, so they are certainly happy to be cheating. Therefore, they would not appoint this man as ref if they felt they could not lean on him to ensure the result does not embarrass them.

A neutral ref would be best. Even minor nations with barely a couple of clubs manage that. Even the nations with no clubs whatsoever manage to get an impartial ref. The AFL are failing even that.

If Australia are comfortably better, then it will be fine. If it is too close, then some key penalties will go the wrong way. Enough for Poms and Kiwis to be uncomfortable, but most Aussies not to notice. If England are much better (unlikely), then we might get the 2006 scenario where some Aussie players will have a free time.

The issue is not so much whether the ref is neutral so much as whether he is impartial. The AFL would not have orchestrated this if they thought the new ref would be impartial. They are too gutless to risk Australia losing twice on their watch.
