4TH ASHES TEST: England v Australia at Chester-le-Street Aug 9-13, 2013

Australia would want to get a lead of 120 - 140 on this pitch, because they wouldn't want to be chasing much in the fourth innings

Having said that, Australia will probably lead by 60 - 80

Unfortunately the tail is weak at 8 down. Theres no pattinson starc or agar to get 30 to 60 more. Bird and lyon will only add a drip if anything.

Bird's batting puts him behind in the selection process. The selectors would like everyone in the Australian 11 to be able to bat

1. Ideally (cant see it happening, no chance) we are bowled out after tea sometime and have a 220-240 lead, poms forced to bat 40-50min late on day 3, and are 3/20 at stumps :)

2. Realistically, I can see us getting skittled before lunch and only have a 50 run lead, if that.

Big key is Rogers and Haddin try to bat out most if not all the first session today. If one of them depart, the other has to be not out at the end, and all the tail have to contribute a bit. Only way we will get a decent lead

Havent seen Leedswhino in here for a good while, wonder if he will show if an early wicket falls?

68 is a really good score on this pitch. Well done Sunshine. 101 is a phenomenal effort by Buck. Hope he gets a not out. Let Hads and the bowlers chase quick runs for a lead.

No need for quick runs, there is still heaps of time left in this game. Keep batting past lunch if possible and get a lead of 100+

Need to build on this so alot will depends on these two, no Starc or Agar to make big scores from our tail.

Don't want to be chasing too many in the 4th innings.

Watson proves #6 is the spot for him. At 6 getting 30-60 often does the job. Should never open again.

Warner should be dropped for the next test but he won't be.

Rogers was excellent. Should be opening with Hughes for the forseeable future. If the selectors had any sense.

Why should Warner be dropped for the next test?!

He has the second best record out of all of our batsmen.

It's time to stick solid.

Because he shouldn't have been there in the first place. One score out of 4 goes on roads in Africa against an oridinary team, and even that score was just 40 more runs than the big show got on the same day. He had no right to be there.

He would have been there for match 1 if he didn't throw a punch at root

Sending him to Africa was purely for match practice.

Hard to believe but I kind of agree with BunniesMan on this one.

What has Warner done recently to justify a spot? Nothing. Not in great form and played a horrible shot to get out.

Not that I think Hughes is the answer though. Will be very keen to see how Maddinson goes in the early rounds of the Shield this summer.

The same can be said about numerous of our batsmen.

Big difference with Warner is he actually has performed well relatively recently.

Last year he had over 1000 runs with two centuries and four fifties @43

Averaging 30 isn't "playing well".

He provides no long term value and he is averaging 30 for the series. So little in the short term as well. Absolutely nothing justified him being played ahead of Hughes or Khawaja. He was a stopgap replacement for Warner when it should have been Hughes opening, and now averaging 30 isn't enough to drop him. Farcical.

yep.

Warner had a poor Indian series - but still better than Hughes. He's only had two tests back and has shown over time he's a decent international cricketer - again better than the other options.

It's August. It's time to focus on 2013 results.

Hughes averaged 62 on this tour and had our highest score by a recognised batsman after 2 tests despite playing away from the position that best suited his talents. If he played where he is meant to he'd be doing a thousand times more with his chances than Warner.

Warner averages 38.9 opening the batting for Australia. Phil Hughes averages 34.6.

Why is Hughes a test opener and Warner not a test opener? Because he has less runs? Worse average? Less regular scores of fifty plus?

It shouldnt even be about Warner, it should be about Hughes, who could just score some consistent runs for Australia if he wants to play in the test team. At the moment he's shown himself unable to step up to test cricket.

lol I like how every thread somehow turns into BM trying to get possibly the worst top order batsman technically you'll see for a test batsman. I swear he must pay domestic bowlers to bowl short and wide all day because I don't know how he scores so heavily there.

BM is the most clueless poster in the history of the Internet.
