to be fair he was picked as an all rounder when Green was injured, so maybe pick your best 5 then your best all rounder, but picking an all rounder who cant bowl is pretty stoopid
Especially when he’s not much good with the bat either

I don’t think it’s the end of the road for McSweeney, after the Ashes next summer I think Uzzie, Smith and Marsh will all pull up stumps. He will get another chance, potentially lower down the order.

McSweeney appeared to be a pick for the future. They give him three tests against the best bowler in the world in trying conditions and give him the chop. They've got it totally wrong and now pissed all over him.
Can't disagree with most of what Michael Clarke said in his most recent podcast, especially when the issue of McSweeney's omission was discussed in depth:

So, an update on a post I wrote back during the Perth test:

Smith's 101 in the Gabba test ended his 24 inning drought without a test century.

Khawaja have gone 29 innings without a test century (furthermore, has only scored 5 fifties during those 29 innings).

Labuschagne has gone 21 innings without a test century.

To put that in perspective with other top-order batsmen from years gone by who managed to pull off a "career-saving" century after intense media scrutiny:

- Ricky Ponting went 33 innings without a test century until his 134 vs India in Sydney, 2012
- Matthew Hayden went 30 innings until his 138 vs England at The Oval, 2005
- Mike Hussey went 28 innings until his 121 vs England at The Oval, 2009
- David Warner went 27 innings until his 200 vs South Africa at Melbourne, 2022
- Mark Taylor went 24 innings until his 129 vs England at Edgbaston, 1997

So, Labuschagne is edging up into the category, whilst Khawaja is already there (between Hussey and Hayden).

Furthermore, Khawaja recently turned 38 and is about 7 1/2 years older than Labuschagne, so age is definitely not on his side. He may have aspirations to play on until next summer's Ashes series, but that maybe taken out of Khawaja's hands if continued poor performances with the bat ensue.

Usman is getting the test matches back that got robbed off him during his peak.

I think in his favour is there no standout candidate at opener scoring runs except Konstas.

I never listen to podcasts but Clarke is spot on here. Echoes what most people in the country are saying.

It's a completely backwards decision.

Marsh is incredibly weird to me, demonstrably a test plod, with occasional highlights. Labuschange simultaneously the luckiest and most overrated test bat I can think of…

obviously Green comes back at some stage, so maybe Marsh will have to be dropped

Envious that you have test cricket, don’t think we have another one until July, and god knows when the next home one is

Green should be fit around March next year so Marsh will be gone by then IMO, assuming he is not gone sooner

Australia's weird obsession with all-rounders needs to stop. If a player isn't a top 6 quality test batsman then they shouldn't even be considered

Flintoff carved us hall in 2005 and we’ve been obsessed ever since. The thing is, these players often get turned into batsmen.

that's started it but Freddy was good enough to make the team as either batsman or bowler, the nearest we have to him is Green

Marsh isn't good enough to do either so maybe a middle order batsman like McSweeny could be a better option assumming they are going to pick big Sam at the top of the batting order

When does Greenberg start in the job?

He should do something useful for once and piss off the selectors. Wishful thinking I know he will probably gift Bailey's wife a diamond ring.
