Bryce McGain said we need to keep Harris at the top the order and Head misses out. That’s settled then.
I can live with that.

Because if harris fails again there will no more excuses he had a full series at the top of the order to stake a claim.

Great article on Smith's drop in output since the 2019 Ashes: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/...mber-the-curious-case-of-steven-smith-1296387
Interesting to note kleenex kohli hasnt made a test ton in almost 2 years either. I don't know about Root, but has KW surpassed Smiffy and Kohli as #1 in that 'Big 4'? Context pretty important though, Kohli's 79 in the current SA v India test probably worth about 120.

Bit of a concern heading into Asian countries this year where he has basically been our lone hand with the bat in recent tours over there. Do need a couple of others to contribute if we are to be fairly succesful

Khawaja to open in Hobart but Boland under a cloud

Australia captain Pat Cummins confirms Australia will make a change at the top of the order but the make-up of the bowling attack remains unclear

@LouisDBCameron

Usman Khawaja's irresistible form has seen him hold his place for the Vodafone Ashes finale in Hobart but his promotion up the order has come at the expense of opener Marcus Harris.
Pat Cummins today confirmed Travis Head would reclaim the No.5 position he was forced to vacate for the Sydney Test after contracting COVID-19 and being forced into isolation in Melbourne following Australia's series victory.
Khawaja's twin hundreds in his remarkable return to Test cricket last week after a two-and-a-half-year absence has seen Harris squeezed out of the XI to face England at Blundstone Arena in the series' second-day-night contest.
Praised for his Test-high 76 in the low-scoring third Test at the MCG, Harris has nonetheless been axed after making 179 runs at 29.83 for the series and now with no centuries to show from 14 Tests.
But Australia are yet to decide on the make-up of their bowling unit for Hobart, with Cummins and selectors waiting to see how Scott Boland fares at training this evening at Blundstone Arena.
Jhye Richardson is also pushing for a return to the side following his impressive pink-ball effort in Adelaide where he took a final-day five-wicket haul.

Squads

Australia:
Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith (vc), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner
England: Joe Root (c), James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Dom Bess, Sam Billings, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Lol@this:

But the left-handed Victorian has copped criticism for failing to convert starts into big scores — after 14 Tests in Australian whites, he has only reached 50 on three occasions with no centuries to his name.

However, he has passed 20 in his four most recent innings, helping get the shine off the Kookaburra before exposing the middle-order.

Good decision re Khawaja. We pencilled in Harris well before the series started which was a mistake in hindsight. Head was in hot form and it shouldn't have been a battle with Khawaja for the middle order.

Khawaja is proven at the top of the order. He should keep the position for the tour of Pakistan. If Pucovski can finally stay on the field he can get his chance next home Summer. Khawaja and Warner are both turning 36 later this year and if he stays fit he looks like a long-term answer.

As for Harris, he has improved a little in this series. If he really is any good he will go back to shield and become a better player. Same goes for Renshaw and anyone else who has come and gone from this team.

What’s the go with Hazelwood? I thought he was initially left out as a precaution, now his disappeared?

Brett Lee was saying in commentary one night that these side strains can be difficult to get right and can linger on, which is whats happening with Haze.

Luckily havent needed him all series

England could make 5 changes.

Present and future in focus as Hobart gets slice of Ashes history

Burns for Hameed. Has to happen because Hameed is so inept but a bit like shuffling deck chairs on the titanic.

Billings for Buttler. Injury forced but probably a good thing, Buttler phoned it in all series.

Woakes for Anderson. So they rested Anderson in Brisbane because they wanted him primed for the pink ball test in Adelaide. Now they rest him for the pink ball test in Hobart.

Robinson for Leach. Obviously going for the 4 pronged pace attack especially considering Stokes can't bowl. But history shows that a specialist spinner is useful with the pink ball, even if they are bald.

Pope for Bairstow?. Probable due to injury and England have no other option.

I actually think Pope looks like a guy they should stick with for a bit. Comparatively anyway. So if Bairstow is hurt that's not a bad in.

Resting Anderson for the last Test of a series, which is a pink ball Test in a city that generally gives you good movement, is mind boggling and should lead to the immediate sacking of coach and captain.

Hameed needs to be dropped. Burns sucks but does have Test hundreds. Same same, but different really.

I agree with Pope, he's not too bad and looks to have a good future.
