I notice the nrl said the refs got dropped for having different tackle counts .
Bit harsh on the bloke that got it right
anyone see NRL 360? There are now claims that Lui knocked on before kicking the ball, so the first tackle should have been zero and the refs got the call right...
Its still a kick bro, whether it touches the ground first or not

Was he going for a field goal?

Knock on = zero tackle
The ball clearly hits the ground first ( making it a knock on by the rules)
He wasn't attempting a field goal or goal line drop out.
Now... I don't think he dropped the ball as such
But if you want to get technical and do it by the rules then it was a zero tackle.
Fair try
Also 53 minute thurston got away with a blatant trip whereas the sharks players dropped the ball and the cows scored a converted try as a direct result.

AL.pdf[/url]
It describes a drop out and a drop goal
To which this was neither
It also describes a knock on , to which this is (by the rules of the game) one.
He was attempting a grubber
Ball hits the ground first
Sure he may have meant it
Doesn't make it not a knock on.
