Kinda negates the point of having a fishtank if you can't see the fish though doesn't it?
You are right to an extent about the whole cleanliness thing though. While you should always keep the tank clean, the filter has to have a certain level of bacteria in it to keep the whole cleaning cycle happening.
Fish poo will kill fish if nothing is done with the chemicals that are in it. The Bacteria in the filter, consume some of the harmful contaminants in the tank that are introduced via fish poo. If you clean the tank and the filter out completely, you remove all the poo but you also remove the filters ability to deal with the next lot of poo. Its an amateur mistake.
Couple of pointers, for Fresh Water aquariums.
- The bigger the tank, the easier the maintenance
- That old chestnut about fish only growing as big as the tank allows them is a load of garbage. Your fish will continue growing no matter the tank size.
- Never dump a whole heap of fish into a brand new tank. All your expensive new fish will be dead within the week.
- Leave a new tank full of water for about two weeks and then introduce new fish one at a time or in pairs.
- If you have a light source on your tank, you will need some plants in the tank, otherwise you will develop an algae problem.
- Don't empty all the water out of your tank and refill it, best to change 20% to 40% of the water once a week or once a fortnight.
- Don't clean your filter completely. When you clean or change the filter media, always leave some of the old stuff in there.
Feel free to give me a yell if you have any questions. I've been keeping Aquariums in some shape or form for about the last 15 - 20 years so I have a fairly decent idea and I'm happy to help.
