I'm all for the draft, if not a transfer system where sides are compenstated for the loss of there players.

My main problem is no one really cares about the team they play for. Mostly because it's rare for a player to actually stay in the area he was raised. There's the occasional player like Kevin Garnett who wants to be loyal but in most cases in both the NFL and NBA the players care about winning the competition for themselves they don't care about the team.

This also leads to more player movement because players don't have any loyalty to any club all they care about is $$$ and how good the team is. I realise the NRL is heading more in this direction but i don't want us to end up as bad.

Also the NBA and NFL are extremely uneven in terms of competition. It's always the same teams dominating, and generally their dominance lasts for a large period of time. Although i will admit this may be a reflection more on the salary cap more than the draft.

Having said that the draft doesn't seem to have done much to balance the AFL in recent times.

You'll find mnay player in the NFL dont even live in there cities they play for.

Ralph Wilson owner of the buffalo bills since its inception lives in Detroit, pretty sure always has.

anti-tampering laws were difficult to prove, but there was always suggestions that all clubs disregarded them.

As to the draft. Good concept, never going to happen again in League. Mr Hill and the High Court saw to that.

Of course Bellamy is in favour of a draft .

Melbourne don't have their own catchment area to draw juniors from. In a draft all the junior talent across the country go into a pool to be drawn off by the clubs according to a set criteria e.g bottom of the ladder last year 1st draft pick next year.

How many Victorian juniors do you see being part of a national pool of players with potential to play NRL compared with the number from Qld and NSW ???

Makes Melbourne Storm's recruitment easier especially if they get concessions such as higher draht choices for not being in a league heartland.

All that will happen is young players will be forced to play for what ever team they are told to play for until their contract runs out and then they will transfer out anyway.

Nathan Buckley joined the Bris. Bears in the AFL under this system and told everyone that he was just doing his time until he could get to Collingwood.

What a surprise that the Melbourne Storm are interested in the draft.

Stick to coming up with illegal tackles.

Transfer Fees
Transfer fees are even worse imo.... contract lengths have no meaning at all.

theres nothing wrong with the system as it is. the salary cap keeps the sides even enough...

no one has the right to dictate to the players where they can ply there trade.

if they go anywhere near a draft you may aswell hand these kids over to RU.

How else do you develop a game in non traditional areas??? Of course Melbourne are going to be in favour of it. I assume you are one of the people who wants to go back to the NSWRL where it's a zoning setup and noone outside of your area cares about the game.
Did you expect Victoria to suddenly produce first grade potential talen the second we have a team down here??

I think what Buckshot was highlighting was the fact that Bellamy is suggesting the draft as a proposal to avoid mid-season signings, yet perhaps he's only suggesting it because it advantages the storm far more than any other club. Good point.

I can't see how on earth a draft has got anything to do with the June 30 deadline or mid season signings. It certainly wouldnt solve any of the problems associated with it, rather create many more problems on its own.

Your first point about nobody cares about the team is an issue draft or not, does Willie Mason really care about playing for the Roosters???.

I think you will find the NBA and NFL are probably some of the more "even" competitions in the history of world sport, yes you have some teams dominanting for periods, but mostly thats because they "drafted" well. (i.e. New England Patsies, Cowboys, 49ers etc.)

But even this domination only lasts a few years at most, look at the NY Giants rank outsiders in the Superbowl, a team that drafted Eli Manning a few years ago.

NBA has had similiar draft scenario, like Cleveland drafting their home town boy LeBron James and going from last place to playoffs.

Anyone else wish Andrew Johns was the cowboys best ever player? or that Hazem El Masri was Melbourne's highest ever pointscorer? Maybe that Shane Webcke was a roosters player who had learned to love the latte life?

I don't. Local heroes are the lifeblood of the NRL. The 'local boy' factor gives the teams their character.

I like that the Bulldogs are a hard club for hard westies. I like that the cowboys have a few aboriginal blokes from remote towns with raw natural talent. I like that Raiders fans have been talking up Weyman and Carney as God's gift to the sport, through years of injuries and problems and unimpressive games.
I even like that the club thats famous for -not- using local juniors, the Roosters, is proud of being hated by everyone for being a talent poaching bastard club.

If we had a draft we'd be like the AFL and have a comp full of homogenous teams with no real meaning or difference except the shirt they wear.
No problem is bad enough that we should fix it by taking the soul out of the comp.

Iam all for a draft style system, although the lawyers will not let it happen. At present we have the yearling sales every year where the boys from Bondi and Brookvale try to buy the lot and who can blame them, where is the reward for going back to grass roots and developing your own talent

That's one example. However there are plenty of players in the NRL who do care. This is almost non-existant in both the NBA and NFL.

Your right it is an issue at the moment regardless of the draft, however the draft just makes the problem 10 times worse.

I think you will find the NBA and NFL are probably some of the more "even" competitions in the history of world sport, yes you have some teams dominanting for periods, but mostly thats because they "drafted" well. (i.e. New England Patsies, Cowboys, 49ers etc.

I'm not really sure i want to get into a debate about this but which has been more "even" the NRL or the NFL/NBA over the last 10 years, i'm pretty sure we both know the answer to that question.

Also being "even" in terms of world sports counts for little. Most sporting comps around the world are totally unbalanced. We currently have a system in place which provides us with one of if not the most balanced comp in the world, why change this?

But even this domination only lasts a few years at most, look at the NY Giants rank outsiders in the Superbowl, a team that drafted Eli Manning a few years ago.

NBA has had similiar draft scenario, like Cleveland drafting their home town boy LeBron James and going from last place to playoffs.

West tigers and the panthers both had turnarounds as if not more impressive than both those examples.

Not to mention it's not as if Cleveland are gonna have an actually shot at winning the NBA title anytime soon.
