I'm all for the draft, if not a transfer system where sides are compenstated for the loss of there players.
My main problem is no one really cares about the team they play for. Mostly because it's rare for a player to actually stay in the area he was raised. There's the occasional player like Kevin Garnett who wants to be loyal but in most cases in both the NFL and NBA the players care about winning the competition for themselves they don't care about the team.
This also leads to more player movement because players don't have any loyalty to any club all they care about is $$$ and how good the team is. I realise the NRL is heading more in this direction but i don't want us to end up as bad.
Also the NBA and NFL are extremely uneven in terms of competition. It's always the same teams dominating, and generally their dominance lasts for a large period of time. Although i will admit this may be a reflection more on the salary cap more than the draft.
Having said that the draft doesn't seem to have done much to balance the AFL in recent times.
Transfer fees are even worse imo.... contract lengths have no meaning at all.Transfer Fees
Of course Bellamy is in favour of a draft .
Melbourne don't have their own catchment area to draw juniors from. In a draft all the junior talent across the country go into a pool to be drawn off by the clubs according to a set criteria e.g bottom of the ladder last year 1st draft pick next year.
How many Victorian juniors do you see being part of a national pool of players with potential to play NRL compared with the number from Qld and NSW ???
Makes Melbourne Storm's recruitment easier especially if they get concessions such as higher draht choices for not being in a league heartland.
All that will happen is young players will be forced to play for what ever team they are told to play for until their contract runs out and then they will transfer out anyway.
Nathan Buckley joined the Bris. Bears in the AFL under this system and told everyone that he was just doing his time until he could get to Collingwood.
What a surprise that the Melbourne Storm are interested in the draft.
Stick to coming up with illegal tackles.
How else do you develop a game in non traditional areas??? Of course Melbourne are going to be in favour of it. I assume you are one of the people who wants to go back to the NSWRL where it's a zoning setup and noone outside of your area cares about the game.
Did you expect Victoria to suddenly produce first grade potential talen the second we have a team down here??

Your first point about nobody cares about the team is an issue draft or not, does Willie Mason really care about playing for the Roosters???.
I think you will find the NBA and NFL are probably some of the more "even" competitions in the history of world sport, yes you have some teams dominanting for periods, but mostly thats because they "drafted" well. (i.e. New England Patsies, Cowboys, 49ers etc.)
But even this domination only lasts a few years at most, look at the NY Giants rank outsiders in the Superbowl, a team that drafted Eli Manning a few years ago.

NBA has had similiar draft scenario, like Cleveland drafting their home town boy LeBron James and going from last place to playoffs.
