A Draft?

Needs to be a 2-3 week period in the off-season when all the player movements occur.

I know people say this cant work because of threat of Union and ESL. Well put clauses into their contracts re: it. Just because rivals come from different codes or bodies does not mean that clubs cannot put in clauses banning individuals to negotiate with other companies/businesses until a certain date.

Was everyone aware that Bellamy uses the grapple, the choker, the terminator, the refrigerator, the arm screw holds on these players during contract negotiations ?

Talk about a restraint of trade.

draft wont solve the problem of young homesick players wanting to stay with their family... it will do exactly the opposite

Well if they don't want to play pro footy they can always stay at home with thier mates and families and get real jobs.

If they get home sick then retire and go home simple. If you want to play footy then suck it, dry your tears and get on with it.

young players have a right to choose where they want to play. its up to the individual clubs to make their clubs attractive for them to go to

There won't be a draft. Talking about it is a waste of breath.

The players won't wear it and there are options for players outside the NRL.

It's sh*t anyway. Players should be able to choose where they want to go, and where's the incentive to develop local talent?

Draft could work great...
You have to have a system in place in which junior devolpment isnt effected and thats
easy to do...
You just apply the Draft to first grade players with a certain qouta of games played..
This would allow junior players to be developed with out any issues of being moved around..
I Tonga and Folau's case...this would give them the option of either re-signing with there club or entering the draft...

It would end so much riduclous player signing rubbish once and for all..

I think the current system is fine:

St George Illawarra produce the goods and distribute.

There’s no incentive as is. Look at the Raiders; we produce our own local talent only to have it poached.

f**k me; I didn't realize that every player in the NRL had a vagina. These kids need to harden the f**k up. I’m not saying the draft is the solution but the system is broke and it's a concept worth discussing.

Most young men are out the family home at 18 if they haven't pissed off before hand, and they aren't guaranteed $55,000 p/y safety blanket. Some of us work 9-to-5 and then a 6-to-1 to try creating a future for ourselves. Some of us go to uni and juggle studying full time and work to pay our rent and tuition. Seriously, people need to stop making excuses for these merkins. We’re creating a league of molly-coddled stillborn man children unable to accept responsibility and function within society. I guarantee a draft would be hugely beneficial to the development of players, not just as rugby league players but as human beings.

I personally think a player trade and transfer system like the NBA’s should be explored. In essence it allows franchisees to trade players and their contracts to other clubs for players and/or money.

I dont know about a draft, but maybe system where you dont have these early signings for the next season even though the current season has barely started.

Ok... say for 2007 season for eg a team like the Panthers (wooden spooners) got first pick of the draft and they signed Mark O'Meley who was off contract at the end of 2007. THEN, after they signed him, Mason gets a release from the Bulldogs. Panthers would've preferred him instead but they've signed O'Meley already (because they nor anybody else saw this coming)... what would happen in that situation? Who would've got first preference at signing Mason?

The draft is a terrible idea. Anyone who follows the NBA and NFL like i do will know that it doesn't achieve anything like what is being suggested. I hope the NRL stays far away form the systems employed by both these competitions as they are seriously flawed and result in players who don't care about their club, more player movement and you only have to look at results to see what it does for balancing the competition.

I dont think its needed at all. What is wrong with players going where they want to and clubs buying who they want? It just needs to be windowed properly to stop it occuring in Rnd 1.

Billy can you explain how you think it doesnt work in America?

For mine its worked pretty well over the years, pretty funny how capitalist america's sports are the last bastion of socialism in the world.

My main problem is no one really cares about the team they play for. Mostly because it's rare for a player to actually stay in the area he was raised. There's the occasional player like Kevin Garnett who wants to be loyal but in most cases in both the NFL and NBA the players care about winning the competition for themselves they don't care about the team.

This also leads to more player movement because players don't have any loyalty to any club all they care about is $$$ and how good the team is. I realise the NRL is heading more in this direction but i don't want us to end up as bad.

Also the NBA and NFL are extremely uneven in terms of competition. It's always the same teams dominating, and generally their dominance lasts for a large period of time. Although i will admit this may be a reflection more on the salary cap more than the draft.

Having said that the draft doesn't seem to have done much to balance the AFL in recent times.
